Hello! and what else should be done when changing variocam pads?
 

I just bought my first Boxster after years of messing with a 944 turbo. It is going to be a dedicated track-day car, only driven on the street to the track and back (8 hours each direction ;) ). I will probably be asking a few questions at first, but I will try to contribute onece I'm up to it.

The car is a bit rough, and needs some attention, especially the cam convergence is out of tolerance. I'll have the car flatbedded to me and will change the IMS, install a deep sump and change the chain pads before I drive it.

Is there anything else I should do while I'm in there? Should I order any tensioners, seals, o-rings or other chain guides? I've been looking at the PET, but I'm new to this engine, so I would appreciate any tips from those in the know.


Also, where can I find the Workshop manual? It has been invaluable when working on the 951.

This is what I have learnt so far are good WYIT items
Change the spark plug tubes and o-rings.
Change water pump, if it is of unknown age.
Change RMS while changing IMS
Swap to an underdrive pulley for the serpentine to save components when on track.
Change plugs if needed

I'm sure I'm missing something, but this is all I have so far.

Hi and welcome! Since you're that far in you should pull the hydraulic lifters. IIRC Jake Raby has said he has found bad tappets at ~35k miles? TStone had a destroyed engine from the carrier failing. Of course updated tensioners also. Have fun. I need a big shop:(

Just make sure they are replaced into their original position if reused. You will be checking to make sure the hydraulic piston is not stuck or sticking. They are the end of the oil train and have no relief port so get fouled from old oil and debris causing sticking and leading to failure. One of the casualties from adhering to Porsches oil change schedule.
