How do you clean your drain holes?

I was cleaning the top this weekend, when I lowered it halfway to clean out the clam shell I noticed that the drain holes on both sides were completely clogged leaving a three inch puddle on either side. The water was blue? Must have been from the foam. I grabbed a Bic pen and managed to squeeze it in the drain hole which let out the water. But the passage has angle to it, when I tried to pull out the leaves and what looked like dirt from a flower pot, with my finger I couldn't really get it out so its more than likely going to get backed up again. Anyone have a good method to clean this?

Consider yourself lucky! I had a small acorn get under the foam tray and in the drain below! Had to use a borescope to find it. Was able to remove it with one of those extended reach tools (link below) without tearing everything apart.
Easiest way to clear I found is to use a short length of something like plastic refrigerator water supply tubing. The drip tray drain hose end is right in the mud flap/ trim piece. It is white 3/8" plastic tbg. Simply insert the small tubing up from below and flush out with some water until clear. Easy.

PSS: Check your front drains, I think they actually collect leaves easier than the rear and are harder to inspect. I made a pair of stainless wire screens for my front drains. They work very well.

Awesome. Where did you get the screen material?

These drain plugs have become an issue. Last year I had two inches under the passenger seat and carpeting behind the seat was always wet.

What I did was bought a stainless strainer basket from Walmart. Couple bucks and plenty of material. Cut the strainer into 2 pieces and used a 1/2" bolt as a form. I then formed the screen around the bolt into a mushroom shape. cut the stem end down to about an inch of length. You can then pull a bunch of loose strands from the stem piece so it fits down into the drain. The mushroom end keeps leaves off the drain and now I have not found water up to the brake booster anymore! Well when it does rain!


The design is not the best IMHO. The foam tray merely guides the water to the actual drain bucket under it, and that of course overflows right into the passenger compartment and you can't see what is really in the actual drain. In my case there was an acorn in there that was a perfect stopper. I now have the drain covers that should keep everything nice and clean.

Good ideas. But if you have your car outside, even with a cover, put some absorbent material or chamois behind both seats to give you an advance warning about where it’s about to happen. If they get damp or wet it’s a wake-up call. Not a solution, but it will wake you up!

i saw someone in the Facebook Porsche Boxster 986 group recommended using a flexible trombone cleaner to push all the way down and through the drain pipes to make sure they're clear. It seems like a good idea as long as pushing the cleaner through doesn't disconnect the drain tube from the drain fitting.

If anyone could help me w a photo of a correctly assembled pushrod attached to the triangle pivot plate and the silver ball (cup end) for a 06 boxster (987.1) that would be appreciated ... i am plugging that drain hole - could be cause of some of my backseat carpet passenger wetness issues ..

I keep mine clean by not allowing anything to get in them.

I did all mine a couple of days ago and a length of rubber fuel pipe is perfect for the job to get round the bends

Yeah, just do what 911monty suggests. Cheap. Easy. I made 4 of them in very little time. Mine are "innies" as opposed to monty's "outties" but they work just fine. I thought about buying the official screens and just balked at spending that kind of money on something that's so easy to make myself for a couple bucks.
