Sound is a lot to a Porsche though, in the most pure bare bones sports car in the lineup outside of the GT program I think it's a lot.

Not to mention this car is going to have 968 syndrome, a good car, and a quality car... But no one wants to pay 70k for a 4 cylinder no matter how fast it is. I just don't see 718 resale being anything impressive in the slightest.

If you haven't had the opportunity to hear a 2015 Boxster S' then by all means go check one out. Be sure to stand right behind the car when they start it up. The tragedy to the sound complaint is that the 2015 is absolutely right. The exhaust note is intoxicating with an urgency that is unbelievable. Makes my 98 sound like it is idling at 400 rpm. So just when it's perfect, It's gone.

My BMW 228xi had a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 240 hp, rated at 0-60 in 5 seconds.

I had reservations about BMW's decision to begin utilizing a 4-cylinder in place of their 6-cylinder engine, which was devine, in my opinion (good horsepower, good torque, and oh so smooth). However, my experience with the 228 was more than satisfactory and restored my faith in BMW's decision makers.

I wouldn't expect anything less from Porsche's decision makers, so rather than panic now, let's wait until the new Boxster/Cayman cars are introduced, tested by the car magazines, and bought by the masses. I'm guessing that they'll like both the 300 hp four in the base, and the 350 hp in the S.

And by the way, my computer's speakers reproduce sound pretty poorly so that hearing the new 718 in a YouTube clip will hardly be a meaningful experience.

Agree.

We're seeing devolution.

I believe Porsche/Volkswagen/Audi is following the "if they want junk, we give them junk" school of profit. It will take a big error to change their thinking. There will have to be a model that sells way under projections to make them realize what they've done.

If Porsche and Audi continue to set sales records as they have been, that doesn't seem like devolution to me - I'd argue that they must be doing something right (Volkswagen sales, on the other hand, are being negatively impacted by the diesel scandal).

I do, however, lament the near disappearance of stick shift cars. I believe I read that 7% of new car sales are now manuals. One might call this particular development "devolution" to be sure.
