				Stelan 986 targa project rendering

I'm working on a targa top for my 986 and that's how is going to look
I will post progress photos, so far all cnc slices are done, frame is completed, basic structure is done, clay modeling done and in the final stages of the model, next sand and refine to create the fiberglass mold

I love targas... Stared at the new one at Porsche Plano while getting a new key programmed. And the the spyders on display. This should be cheaper than the $141k targa on the dealer showroom floor haha
Best of luck - it will be tricky to perfect the integration.

Interesting how your roll hoop comes forward over the drivers head. Curious to see if/how it cuts down on wind buffeting.

			Got a rear view?
Is the entire black part tinted black Plexi or is it fiberglass with a rear window?

Cool idea.

I like all the creative minds out there that enjoy a challenge and are putting their creativity to work.

The Porsche Design team should be checking out what is going on here. Tons of fabulous options have popped up.

So here are our top options:

1) Spyder (Pedro)

2) Cayman (Z-top)

3) Factory Hard Top

4) Factory 2003-04 4-Bow Convertible

5) Targa (Stelan)

Any Others?

The entire top is fiberglass but it has a hatch with window for engine access/rear view? I think the black targa, silver hoop and black rear looks good but I have other versions in mind, see this one with rear section painted the color of the car, I will post other angles soon

			well, here's the dmoris top:
and the british one:

don't forget eric's 996-style race top (w 996 side windows):

or the renegade hybrids/boxtcars cayman-style tops (again w 996 side windows):

here's a cool pic of a zeintop without the hatch (that's what bran used for his photoshop work below):

and back on topic and talking targa, here's a cool rendering with the longer glass back and 996 windows:

dunno if you would need a hatch in the back - depending on how it is attached (ie, just two spinlocks) you could just remove the roof to access engine.

if we are talking FG work and opportunities, I think it would be an interesting project to join the tonneau and the rear trunk into one panel:

'
delete your roof motors/transmissions, the spoiler mechanism, the tonneau cover (keep the tonneau hinges) and the rear trunk lid/hinges. replace with a lightweight 'combo' panel that attaches at the tonneau hinges at the front and the trunk latch at the back. pop the trunk to put roof up and down. save 100 lbs. use a fg tonneau and a fg techart rear trunk lid as a base - the techart lid doesn't have the third brake light cutout, and is longer to cover where the spoiler usually is - eliminates a lot of trim lines on the rear and would really clean things up.

and if that works and is cool, take it one step further and 'glass in a set of speedster humps to get the spyder look on the cheap (ie, not the $7500 tuneRS unit):

combining them all into one panel gets rid of all the trim lines and gaps of the current speedster hump system. further, as one panel, you can attach at the spinlocks and rear trunk latch and be done with it - allows you to drive w/o the actual convertible top and save another 50 lbs (and better areo). mebbe get a boat/canvas shop to make a little bimini top for it using the oem front convertible roof bar.

another thought - if you look at the roofline on a cayman, boxster hardtop, etc., it rises as it leaves the windscreen, then starts to drop once past the roll bar (presumably to provide headroom). by angling the targa hoop forwards as you have, it is now at a much higher point in the roofline than it would be if angled backwards, and is actually higher than the windscreen as currently designed - gonna grab a lot of air.

Agreed. The 918 is a spyder, it doesn't have that large space for air behind the seats like the Boxster would. The new 911 Targa has an adjustable wind blocker at the top of the windshield header, which helped reduce buffeting in the one I drove, but did create a little more wind noise.
