I've always only been interested in the S but the base is at a level were it offers plenty of power and overall capability. It has the same hp and more torque then a 3.4 996 which works for me.

I agree with this sentiment, they have certainly strayed very far from the original 986 design inspiration of the 550.

Not a fan. Maybe it grows on me, but it looks like a vw roadster, not a Porsche. And the over badging lends me to believe im not the only one who thinks that.

And I don't care what porsche says, the flat four sound will never replace the unmistakable sound of the flat 6.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I think it's gorgeous! Granted, it will be years and years till I will ever be able to own one (by then, everyone will love the Turbo 4 and will be complaining now they are all electric!).

To each their own, but I think Porsche has done a great job over the years maintaining the traditional look while still making it modern and desirable.

It's more in line with the 550 then the 981. 986 looked like a 550 from the 90s, 987 looked like a 986 made to fit into the pre 2008 flash of realtors and pocketbooks, 981 looks like Porsche telling the world it's not a women's car, and 718 looks like they're going futuristic but smooth futuristic, you can see the influences from the mission E, things are smoother and I think the interior is the best in the 718 since a well optioned 986 as well.

Dammit!!! I was trying hard to not be the "Purist". I like the interior, the 987 interior was never going to work for me. However to this day I always stop to hear the unmistakably sweet sound of an air-cooled Porsche motor going by. While the Boxster is not as busy at low speed as an air-cooled, chains happily bouncing along, once up to 4k rpm there is enough similarity in sound to raise the heartbeat. I tried hard, but if the clips accurately portray the true sound and I put on headphones to listen, then what a let down. Sounds like a 924.

What is the point of the 718 moniker if they are keeping the Boxster name?

If its to avoid confusion and reinforce that concept that the 718 is the Boxster, then why isn't the new 911 called "981.2 Carrera 911"? Some how 911 buyers can figure it out but not Boxster buyers?

I fear the Porsche badge on the back may take more to remove. Ugh. It just so damn tacky. There is no need to advertise that the car is a Porsche. People who care just know and for everyone else it's just "look at what I'm driving".

The sound is a concern too but I will reserve judgment until I hear it for myself.

The look of 718 has definitely changed compared to the 986/987. My biggest beef is that if has grown in size. I rather they scale it back to the size of the 986 and maybe reduce the weight.

It think it sounds pretty similar to every other modern 4 cyl turbo (focus st, mini jcw, 500 abarth etc). That's not to say it sounds bad, it just might lose some appeal to the small percentage of buyers who are die hard flat 6 fans. I think it looks pretty good in and out, apart from all the wording on the back. For those saying that the front is too square and tall, keep in mind manufacturers have to work around pedestrian impact standards that seem to get stricter and stricter by the year. The 986 would not be legal if it were designed today.

Two reasons why it's called 718.

One. so they can say heritage in the same sentence as 4 cylinder

Two. So they can charge more for the convertible as its now the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman same as 911 Cabriolet and 911 Carrera.

Not bad marketing at all, but it's odd to retrofit a number to a model that already exists without killing off the Boxster name.

Interesting...it wasn't until this thread that I really compared the 986 headlights to the 718.
Pretty easy to see where the kidney bean headlight inspiration came from..... it wasn't the
VW beetle aka Typ 1 headlights like was the case with the 911, 356 and 550.
Note the headlights blended into the signature fenders instead of being screwed on like light bulbs.

Haha! You're absolutely right! (what a mess Porsche has created)

I don't like the front end as much as the older Boxsters, however, I think the rear end looks like a better, more modern evolution of the 986 rear than the 981. Pause the video at the point you are directly behind the Seal Gray 718 and you will see it better. I have to admit that i still like it very much but wish they would drop the Boxster name. Never cared for it too much.

You are being polite about the engine sound. It's far worse than I thought it would be, in fact I wonder if the engineers have made it sound that bad to try and kill it off. :)

I showed my girlfriend the video and what she liked most was the sound of the car Reving at the end as it reminds her a bit more of the muscle cars she grew up liking.

Time for some brain washing to a true flat 6 sound.

The whole giving Porsche's "names" is nothing more than marketing crap.
The other German luxury brands wisely avoided it.
And Porsche have been really inconsistent about it to boot. The 911 got a redundant name, but the other step children did not.
That is until the Boxster came along but that was really only to hype up a new model but in a way that would strip it of its race history, which pre-dated that of the 911, so as not to upstage the flag ship.
So Porsche had to give it an all new identity to have it appear as an upstart.
And then they went fully redundant by giving the coupe version of the Boxster a different name even though it was just a variant! The Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera Coupe are still both Carreras but the Cayman and Boxster are discussed as if they are different models... Which is exactly what Porsche wanted because they intended to market the Cayman as a stepping stone car to upsell the buyer into the more profitable Carrera.
It's all clever marketing.
