The abandoned Porsche, and more ghost town stuff...

Well I found the "barn 356", and it was clearly raced, likely back in the 1970s. It has one rust spot but the rest appears solid. Unfortunately it has also been cut. :(
The owner was out of town, but I left my number with his son.

The car sits at the edge of a very remote ghost town called Navina. Now just a grid of overgrown dirt streets with a few foundations, a couple of structures and an old grain elevator, but apparently 100 years ago it was something.

Neat post.

rexcramer 01-24-2016 01:24 PM

Ghost town is right. It must have been one of the many towns that literally blew away in the Dust Bowl 30's. What's left of the interior? I look forward to hearing the history of the car.

thstone 01-24-2016 01:26 PM

Super cool!

When you say its been "cut", can you describe exactly where or how?

Retroman1969 01-24-2016 01:42 PM

Hopefully the property owner will call so I can find out more. ;)
Interior was complete but shabby. restorable to be sure. The big cutouts around the rear wheel wells to allow the fat tires it what I was referring to. I would assume the inner wells are cut and modified too.

Oh I see, that's not that uncommon fortunately. Would be a neat project if you can get a good deal.

This would make great Velocity channel show.

Thanks guys for your comments!
Yes, it would still be a good catch for the right price. I keep imagining what it once looked like.....

Great photographs & a very enjoyable post, love these old ghost towns, many thanks for sharing with us.

particlewave 01-24-2016 02:47 PM

You'd be surprised at the number of abondoned ghost towns in the middle of America that resulted from the interstate and highway system bypassing small towns.

When I was a child, my grandparents took me to a family reunion in grandmas home town of Eagleville, MO. The "highway" leading to the town was used so little that tall weeds were growing up through cracks all over the road. I think there were three occupied homes out of maybe 100 and all businesses boarded up. I thought for sure that it would be completely desolate by now, but it has taken a surprising turn for the better and has even grown since.

Nine8Six 01-24-2016 04:10 PM

Ouch, what a wreck :/ I just don;t get the people who leaves these sort of cars outdoor, just like that, sitting there. Weird x1,000

Love the thread and pictures. Thanks!

Retroman1969 01-24-2016 05:55 PM

Thanks guys!
This particular town, what little history I could eke out, was developed in 1907 along with 3 other towns in the area because of a railroad being extended through. Since there is no trace of a railroad anywhere, I assume the towns died with it. I haven't found any evidence of Navina surviving past WWII, which could also be a factor.
Most ghost towns in Oklahoma apparently died from: Oil Busts, Fire destroying the entire downtown, Railroads closing, The Depression, The Dust Bowl, Modern highways, and WWII. Between 1925 and 1942, many were punched in the gut by all of the above in a row.

I am also blown away by cars like this being left out to rot as if they were a 1980 Chevy Citation.
This one is right next to a barn that is probably just filled with junk! (Who knows, might be filled with Duesenbergs.... sort of doubt it)
We'll see if I get contacted about it.

Porsche9 01-24-2016 07:03 PM

Wow, what a cool find. If it has the matching numbers engine and trans that would really be something. Unfortunately a lot of these cars were chopped up and treated like any used race car. Even so as long as it's not too far gone from rust it will be worth saving.

Retroman1969 01-25-2016 05:56 AM

It has an engine which has also been modified. I'm not versed well enough to tell if it is a correct Porsche engine.
Does anyone know if they make patch panels to repair the cut quarters? I assume they do.

Oh come on, he put a tarp over it, what more do you guys want?!;) Great find and post! Even in it's rough condition, it would fetch quite a bit of money. Hopefully the owner doesn't know that.

husker boxster 01-25-2016 02:04 PM

Good luck on your adventure. We're pullin for ya.

There has to be replacement panels available. I wouldn't let that deter you from purchasing it.

Did you see the burned barn find 69 Dodge Daytona that sold at Mechum for $90K? The engine compartment had a small fire and there was barn debris over the rest of the car. The wing was mostly frayed fiberglass. It was far messier looking than this 356. You'd be amazed what someone will spend for a "barn fresh" messy car.

On a side note, in the late 1800s my hometown of Wayne, NE and nearby LaPorte were competing for the soon to be built rail line to go thru their respective towns. The RR would only go thru one of the towns and left it up to the two towns to decide who got the line. Legend has it, the towns decided to play a softball game and the winner got the RR. Wayne won, got the rail line, and LaPorte disappeared. The depot is now a Godfather's Pizza.

When you really look at it, and judging from the debris under the car (no tire digging, same leaves/branches as surroundings), it has been placed there a few months ago if not only a few weeks. Looks as if the owner knows all about 'back yard finds' and wanted to advertise the car as such. Sale tactics!

Owner clearly knows its value. Me think he is waiting for the Garage Monkeys to turn up with their camcorder crew ;)

Smallblock454 01-25-2016 03:49 PM

That's a lot of work. Would be intersting how big the holes are below these funny side skirts. :D ;)

Let*s see what price the owner is asking for.

Regards & good luck!
Markus

husker boxster 01-25-2016 04:00 PM

How much downforce does the lawn edging ground effects side skirts generate?

Should I add some to the CSS? I think I have a roll in the basement.

Retroman1969 01-25-2016 05:03 PM

I wondered about that! LOL!
I first thought the "skirts" were hiding rust holes, but I examined as closely as I could and couldn't 'see' any evidence of rust holes. Then I thought "is that supposed to be for.... aerodynamics??"
Which one is true I don't know.
I'm not sure it's even for sale yet. Haven't heard from the owner but he's supposedly out of town. It's worth a follow up visit if I don't hear from him in awhile. ;)

No doubt! I am sure with a little elbow grease, a clay bar, polish and wax it will look great!

Porsche9 01-26-2016 06:16 AM

All the televised auctions out of Arizona in the coming weeks makes sure pretty much everyone thinks their car is worth big bucks. When I first moved to Arizona about 10 years ago I used to go to some of the big auctions just because you could see so many great cars and talk to their owners. Now it's become more about making money and less about the hobby. In one way its good as it drives the restoration of cars that may of otherwise disappeared but on the other hand the cars have become out of reach for many.

Oh absolutely Captain, can picture that real easy. You forgot the truck load of duct tape tho... to patch the inside of the engine of course.

Can't you spot those relics from up the sky in your 747 jet airplane? You might want to keep an eye open for these sort of things... you'd become rich in an instant I'm sure ;) You have a pretty serious advantage over others for that you, no?

I'll get right on that Fred!

Nine8Six 01-26-2016 07:02 AM

Just intercom to your passengers that bad weather ahead forces you to make a small detour and roam over Arizona for a few minutes... Intel says that they are many there. The expansive ones I mean! If not then blame P9 lolll

What a team, amazing forum

The Radium King 01-26-2016 07:13 AM

I know that there are folks that scour google earth looking for the silhouettes of specific vintage airplanes (ie, dc3's); perhaps the same can be done for old tarped porsches - is you ghost town on google street view?

Hands off Arizona. I'm already using a Cessna 172 for my search.;)

tlc356sc 01-26-2016 06:07 PM

356 b t-6

The T-6 version of the B is cool and better than the T-5 because the gas goes in without the hood having to go up. They make a lot of patch panels but you probably are asking about the rear wheel openings and I don't know about those. Look up engine number in Porsche 356 and 912 Serial Number Reference Site
The bigger rust issues will be underneath.
Good luck. Tomhttp://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1453863979.jpg

Retroman1969 01-26-2016 08:13 PM

Thanks for the extra info guys!
I really want to crawl under that thing to see the real condition of the frame.
Nice job on adding the blue one! If only it could look like that again.

dan87951 01-28-2016 09:13 AM

Best part is I bet the owner has no idea what its worth! ;)

tlc356sc 01-29-2016 05:54 AM

356

But maybe the owner saw Foose's "Overhaulin" when he re-made this B model. Of course Foose converted the rear window to an oval and went back to the fifties for beehive tail lights.

street view

its clear on street view dated 2008 in the front yard, must have moved it after that

Retroman1969 02-01-2016 05:55 AM

Wow, now that's interesting! He's had it a few years then. How did you get an older street view shot like that? Is there a Google Maps archive?

78F350 02-01-2016 06:34 AM

Cool thread.
The street-view imagery is dated in the top left corner. If there is a date range of imagery available, there is a clock symbol that you can click on to view the history. Only Feb 2008 of this is available:

This reminds me of a guy I bought a Honda engine from about 5 years ago. He had an extensive Rusty VW collection mostly in barns and out buildings. I don't think that he actually did much with them other than buy them and store them. Even though I was just there to pick up the engine, we spent over an hour looking over his collection - until his wife called him in for dinner. I got a great deal on the engine, but his VW stuff was highly valued and not for sale.
Looked up his address in streetview:

Rear wing on the Mopars was aluminium. It could support the weight of pit crew.

Retroman1969 02-01-2016 01:53 PM

That house is still in the unfinished state that it appears to have been 9 years ago!
I think I need to visit there again instead of waiting for a reply, with this level of procrastination!
