$700 reasonable for windstop + installation?

Hi guys. Just got my brand new 06 Boxster S (silver/black/black) this Saturday. I had a blast driving it for 7 hours on Sunday, but I caught a nasty cold due to the intense draft I suffered. So the plan is to get the windstop, but my dealer wants ~$700 for the job. That sounded a tad excessive, since the original part is just ~$400. Is it really a 3-4 hour job to install (justifying the $300 labour charge)?

BTW, awesome board. I've read a ton of great threads going all the way back to mid last year. So much good information here.

Hi,

The Dealers charge what they charge. But at $700, you can bet you're paying TOP Retail. There are several choices in Chicagoland, so I'd price them all before committing to any one. Hope this helps...

Hey Webster....welcome to the board....
I had the install quoted from a dealership here is So Calif....close to $800
That's steep, but i don't want to do it myself and screw it up---so im saving my euros....

btw...this is without a doubt..the best boxster board there is!

For point of reference, when I was purchasing my base, I had them "due bill" the windstop + colored caps ($185) for $500. Granted, they were "sweetening" the deal, but I think $700-800 dollars is ridiculous. But then again, so is $185 for four multi-colored plastic disks.

I think if you ordered the parts and looked at the install on someone else's 987 you could figure it out, as it doesn't strike me as particularly intricate.

Just buy the windstop kit for $430 and put it in yourself. Can't be too difficult, I imagine. If it is, you still are paying less for the windstop and can take it to a dealer for installation.

You can get the windstop here for $399:

Also check www.sunsetporsche.com they may have a better price.

My car came windstop-less and when I looked into it I thought the only real install was the clip things the window plugs into. I think they require drilling holes and some kind of rivet or something though once I asked the parts guys about it..?? I just wear a hat and raise the passenger window and so have money for a couple new tires.. :)

Check this thread: <http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5477>, it's for a 986 but it should get you started if you're going to DIY.

Bought the parts for a little under $400, and installed myself in one hour..

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I chickened out and got the dealer to do it, though. I'm not yet confident enough to start drilling in my Porsche.
