that they are machined and likely cost more than $3 but still not expensive enough to justify not installing them on all of the 160,000 986 Boxsters built. Until 2003, all Boxsters came with rear defroster wiring and a switch that would only be used with a hardtop. And apparently 996 cabrios used different mounting hardware, but on that model the hardware was installed on every one when built, whether or not it had a hardtop.

2 years ago I paid around $100 for my new spinlocks and put them in anticipating a hardtop purchase - then got lucky finding one on eBay within driving distance and picked it up.
