Should I look At This 2002S

Hi Guys

I'm going to look at this car which will be my 1st Porsche.

Used 2002 Porsche Boxster For Sale Toronto ON | 6388

I have read a fair bit on the form but I have to admit I have never drove one...
So I really have no idea what to look for.

The dealer said that he had no problem letting me get a PPI.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice when I go to look at this?

The rear seal and IMS are suppose to be done but assume that the PPI will check all the mechanical stuff.

I guess I'm looking for what to look for when driving it etc.

Thanks for any advice that you can share.

IMS and rear seal

Really unless you know the shop there is no way you can verify this 100%....this is such a known issue with these cars it has gotten to be a major listing/selling point IMHO.

Hello Bart,
With that much mileage and not knowing the history or maintenance record, I would be very careful. Definitely a PPI by a reputable shop familiar with the 986 is a must.

That asking price is a bit on the high side considering the mileage alone. You can always use that as a bargaining tool if you really like the car. Then be prepared to put aside a fund for needed repairs.
Take your time and get familiar with the Car by looking at several.

Pics make it look very nice...looks like someone took care of her. Price and km's though are a bit high. Are you going to winter drive it? If not, you will also be putting her into storage immediately, can't imagine that would be fun. Might be best to wait till spring? Prices don't seem to change up north here whether winter or summer selling.
In terms of what to watch/listen for - squeaks, rattles, clucks, loose belts...all that good stuff. I would imagine the suspension will be the biggest issue with those K's and age.

And hey - if you do get her or another one, make sure you join the PCA. They do a few great fun runs up and through the Muskokas in the spring and fall. I did my first one this year and it was a blast.

Not too sure about that dealer. They always seem to have 'high end' cars with some wheels on them to make them look flashy. I never really liked the sales people in there either. I wouldnt believe them that they have any proof of IMS or RMS unless they have repair receipts which I doubt because 90% of their cars are from dealer auctions.

My advice sit tight. Tons of cars are starting to pop up due to the weather. Have your cash ready to pounce on a good deal. That car is average.. IMO

FYI Ive had many good times in Baysville and went into Bracebridge many times for good food

You should definitely go look and drive this car. Look at may if possible.

That a 96,000 mile car so not nearly worn out. Service records would be a real help, but most dealers do not have them. The interior look good with a few upgrades.

Find your own shop for a PPI NOT his buddies place or anyone he recommends. You need to have it looked at by a competent and independent tech.

At this mileage you could be looking at:

Clutch, IMS, Water Pump, Coolant Tank, etc... If they did the rear main seal, then maybe they did a clutch and IMS too. They are all part of the same area and should have been done if they were in there.

Thanks Guys

I think I will go for a test drive to see what it's like and get a feel for it.

If I like the car and they have records showing the IMS and Rms have been done then I'm hearing it might be worth looking at it further,

or waiting and seeing if there might be a better deal further into the winter.

(on a side note I called Pfaff the other day and they don't do PPI any more! What the heck?)

What do you think a very good price would be if the car shapes up to what it should be?

Any idea how much on average it costs to do the IMS & RMC?

Find a good independant shop to do the PPI. Much much more cost effective and more than likely will do a more thorough job. Someone on here probably knows a place in the area....

That price sounds high, even for a dealer. Even if you can verify a solid maintenance history, IMO it is +/- $10,000 car in So Cal.

It seems to be a buyers market in southern California.

Private Party was at $10,500 then. It was my second choice.

What does it Blue Book at for your area? I suggest making a "reasonably low" offer and let them counter. A PPI will help you justify any decrease in your offer. Are they apt to sit on this until spring?

Have a look on Kijiji Ontario or the Auto Trader. There are cars in that price range that are private sales. I never trust these used car dealers. Sales people in the used auto busnesses are well versed in the use of bull****************. But that is just me thinking out loud.

Agreed. Wait till spring and keep looking for a private sale. When you find one do an independent PPI. In southern Ontario you have lots to choose from.

On a side note, with the down turn in Alberta there are a ton of vehicles available in Edmonton and Calgary as well. Maybe a road trip is in order.

Agree with this advice to wait until spring. Supply is drying up going into the winter and you have limited means to make a comparison as to whether or not this is good. I actually tracked mileage and price on a scatterplot so i could get an idea of when to pull the trigger on a car. Geeky yeah but i was confident when I purchased.

Also it's difficult to get direction on value as most of the posters are US based and the market and prices are quite a bit less on average. On the upside I've noticed that often the Canadian cars are low milegage due to the seasonality.

Educate yourself over the winter, and be patient.

Boxsters are a challenge to sell because potential buyers get scared off by the Internet drama.Jags have the same problem.Perhaps diesel VW/Audi/Porsche also? Asking prices are misleading.Actual selling prices are more useful than a sellers "I've 'invested' a fortune in this car and now I want my money back!" asking price.
An interesting source of actual sales price data is EBay "Completed Listings" - if you check the sold section.

This is a canadian car, our prices are significantly higher than in the US.

While the mileage is significant, if the PPI comes clean it would seem like a good buy. Try it out, check the maintenance & PPI and let us know about it.
That said, as winter is coming it might be a good idea to wait for spring to come otherwise you'll get a boxster but not really be able to use it.

It looks like things might go in the right direction.

They have the paper work showing the following:
- new 3pc clutch
- new IMS bearing
- new RMS
- oil change
- tune up

The only thing I don't know about is this....The tires

The fronts are....Hercules IRONMAN iMove 225-35-19-88W XL
The rears are.....Michelin Radial X 265-30-19 -93Y

They are at approx. 90%,

Questions:

- should they not be the same manufacture?
- are these sizes OK for the car?
- How does the 19" effect the car over the original 18"
- Was the 19" available for this year.

Question. Does it say how long ago the IMS was changed, or more importantly, how many KMs since the change?

19's are aftermarket. I also have 19's on my boxster. Just change out the ironman front tires to matching michelins and you should be fine

Morning All

The oil change and tune up are current....30 days

The balance of the work was done late may...I don't know how many miles have been put on.

Have you used EU Autowerks before or just heard of there reputation?

I was also thinking of maybe the Porsche dealer in Oakville as they still do PPI.

This way I get a longer test drive...?

What are your thoughts. To me it's 6 one half dozen.
