Do yourself a favour and get the genuine Porsche gear oil - you won't regret it, especially for cold shifting. Porsche gear oil is unique and even large oil companies don't make the exact alternative lube.
Use the search function and you will see lots of people going back to the genuine stuff after experimenting with other lubricants. |
I chose to use factory fill transmission fluid. Lots of threads about notchy shifting with other products.
Yes, it's pricier, but worth it as often as it needs to be done. |

In previous posts we have done deep research into this subject .
There are lots of opinions from people who seem to know little about the chemistry that makes a particular lubricant suitable for the 6 speed gearbox. There are more significant recommendations from the few who actually rebuild these gearboxes. A few us us researched ,shared & debated the technicalities (not opinions) a while back. The short version was to use the factory fill. Swepco 201 was an alternative but it unfortunately lacks some of the significant(?) tribological additives in the Shell factory fill. We failed to find a way of boosting the critical additives in non-Shell oil. My opinion is that part of the 2nd gear issue is the engagement problem(detent) but that insufficient(or depleted?) friction modifiers cause the synchronizer on 2nd to be ineffective in fast gear changes.In stead of speculating ,i reluctantly chose to replace the oil at 60k or less intervals with Shell factory fill.I was hoping to come up with an improvement on the Shell but failed. It has been reported that the gbox lubricant is seldom changed at any mileage and that may explain the failures/problems. But the pros/cons of specific lubricants are trivial if the seal has failed on the infamous bearing and the 2nd gear teeth are worn. Why? Because you'll be removing and rebuilding the gearbox eventually to replace that bearing and 2nd gear. |
So am I ok to wait to 60k. I don't have any shifting problems.

Also if you have shifting problems when cold, check the front engine / motor mount. That solved my shifting problems completely. My only problem with 2 gear was that it was not shiftable when gearbox was cold. There are others that report that the 2 gear jumps out. That is the detend problem Gelbster is talking about.
I would recommend the gear oils Porsche recommends, because they have a very special API 4 / 5 composition and additives. In your case with a Box 2000 S Shell Spirax 75W-90 or Mobil Mobilube PTX 75W-90 are the recommended gear box oils by Porsche. I use the Shell Spirax now. Got it from a group buy. Try Suncoast Porsche. They sell by the liter. it was $29/L +shipping a few years ago when I changed the gear oil in my 6 speed.

Why is it you can't just pick up, seems like everything I buy I need to pay shipping these days. Nice to just pick up.
