Nice !
Now make it a two seater and give me 100 000$ so I can buy it :) |

Yeah, we get it, already. That's what happens when you wear blinders and stare into the past longingly. I've got a good lead on a horse-drawn buggy for you. ;) |
Read an auto story today about the writer taking a P85D on a trip. He had to stop every 200 miles to supercharge for an hour. All for only $80,000.
These are nothing but expensive toys. If Porsche/Tesla/etc really wanted to change the world, they would offer a 3-series sedan with 350 miles of range with a 5 min full recharge that sells for $40K. Until that happens, e-cars are curiosities, not real transportation. |
Or just that people don't do road trips all the time and don't need that kind of range.

Getting to 80% would take 45 minutes. So Going from 18 miles left to back to 230 miles in under an hour of supercharging, is not something the typical driver would even need to do every day. Also, wouldn't 200 miles driven take the typical driver about 3 hours? I think you have to be cut out for being stuck in a car that long in the first place. Any longer than than that and I'm on my jet. :) |

99.9% of buyers would never use that more than one day a year but 99.9% of buyers would feel a lot better about spending $80,000 on a car with a 200 range. |
Those "curiosities" sure are selling well. ;)
Apparently, some people don't agree with your perspective. |
I actually like it. It's a sexy looking car, although I don't care much for the scoopy bat mobile nose.
I'm guessing that this technology is going to happen. It's just going to take time. Rome wasn't built in a day and all that. The Automobile itself was once considered just a pointless expensive toy that would never amount to anything. How many decades did it take for them to become reliable, efficient, and mainstream? PCs were big, clunky, slow, nearly useless machines that had less power than the clock on my Blue Ray player. It took decades to reach their full potential, and now I can talk to satellites and surf the net at lightning speed while taking 10.5 megapixel HDR pictures and video from my wallet-sized cell phone while it streams near endless hi-def music to my car stereo through Bluetooth. (Back in the 80s you could have never, ever convinced me any of that would be possible in my lifetime). I'm not overly eager to see the big change, because like most enthusiasts, I like the sounds and mechanical feel of cars as they are today. But if it's going to happen I can only hope for exciting, well thought out products. Looks like Porsche is working hard on that and I'm curious to see where it goes. (My apologies, I didn't intend on that becoming such a long rant). |
I've always defended Porsche's "other ventures" on the basis that they are the best in their class.
I'd always rather have a boxster or 911... But if I need an SUV, I'm glad to know there is a damn good cayanne diesel S available. If I must buy a 4 seater, the Macan is an option I'd much rather find myself in than a juke or GLK. While it may dilute Porsche to an extent, I think I find that a fair trade off for exciting cars in segments I would otherwise never touch with a 10 foot pole. The mission E fits into this philosophy; id rather have a 981 spyder, but if I'm going electric, I am going with tech derived from the 918 and 919. |
