P0154 -O2 sensor before ahead of cat. conv. Cylinder (4-6)

Hi All, I have a 2000 Boxster S with 43,000 kms. Went for a drive the other day when the check engine light came on. Durametric software shows fault code:

P0154:
Porsche fault code 18 - O2 sensor ahead of cat. conv. Cylinder (4-6)


Is this code indicating that the 02 sensor before the CAT should be replaced on the drivers side? The one closet to the muffler?

Is this the correct part?

This can mean that the sensor is out of range, as well. The sensor may NOT be the actual issue, it is possible monitoring a condition that puts it out of range. Check fuel trim values that may indicate a vacuum leak or MAF sensor issue that are leading to this.

All the time people treat a symptom, rather than a condition. It doesn't work.

How many times have you had that code? Is it intermittent?

That would be the one ahead of the catalytic converter, closest to (or on) the exhaust manifold. I would suggest using Durametric to see live data from that O2 sensor to find out what it's doing.

Maybe you can clear the code for now. If it comes back, then start checking the voltage the sensor is producing.

P0154 indicates a signal loss from the sensor. While it could be the sensor, more often it is a connector or wiring issue causing the interruption.

Thanks everyone. I will be doing some actual readings using the Durametric software tonight. Will post results. Just another thing worth mentioning is that when the engine light came on it was running on gas from last November from when I put the car in storage. I did use fuel stabilizer. I filled up using Shell 91 this past weekend.

Hi All, just an update. Since filling up with a fresh tank of gas the CEL hasn't returned. I brought the car for emissions test this morning and it passed.


I will keep you posted if it CEL returns.

Following up on Jake's comment. I've seen so many reports of people getting P0154 and getting a new sensor - but it only works for a while. What if I swap my sensors? The left one and the right one. If it's the sensor, then would I then get P0134? And if I get P0154, look somewhere else?
