Do you park in gear?
I ran this poll a while back and was surprised by how few use only the e-brake.
Maybe this result will be a little different with newer forum members included. |
Yes and the parking brake.
|
No my parking brake is in perfect adjustment, so I never place the car in gear unless I'm on a hill.
|
Gear and parking brake, regardless of a hill.
|
Because my Box isn't a daily driver i always only park in gear and don't use parking brakes. Brakes tend to block if the car is stored for a longer time.
|
No. Never.
If on a hill, e-brake and wheels cranked toward the curb. |
E-Brake only
I may start parking in gear now  |
Anything can happen, so for me: e-brake, in gear, and wheels turned if next to a curb.
|
I use both 1st gear and the e-brake. Even in my garage force of habit.
|
E Brake, In Gear, Wheels in a safe direction. I had one in-explicitly roll on me. Call it suspenders and belt if you must.
|
In gear all the time
sometimes E-brake as well, such as on a hill or not flat Wheels always turned to the curb |
ebrake only in driveway, but anywhere outside my house, ebrake with gear.
|
Its flat here in Miami, so in gear only. I had a VW that I left outside, unused during an entire Wisconsin winter, with the parking brake on. If I remember correctly, it took hammers and torches to get it free.
The only good argument I have heard for using the parking brake only, is that if you leave it in first for example and the car gets hit from the front, the motor can get ruined (timing will be thrown off) because the motor will be turning backwards, which is a no-no. |
E brake and in gear. Steep hill, wheels to curb and in Reverse.
|
E-brake and in 1st. Steep uphill, add: wheels to curb. Steep downhill add again: shifter in reverse.
|
in the garage i park in reverse always now ( parked it in N with no ebrake one and it pumped into the pull up handle on the garage door :(
when I'm out somewhere reverse / e brake |
E-brake and either 1st or 2nd gear. My driveway has enough of a slope I don't want to find my car/s across the street.
And I'm getting old... If I forget one, hopefully I'll remember the other! :D |
E-brake and 1st gear. Always.
Don't be this guy... <iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/B2cgH89yXIc?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
E brake and 2nd. Always.
|
1st gear only when parking in public. I only use the e brake if I get out while its running and I think the car might roll. Garage its always out of gear with e brake off. I back into the garage and then grab it by the spoke of the rim to roll it back into the perfect position. I also manually roll it back and forth when Im applying Back to Black on the tires.
|
1st gear plus parking brake always
|
Depends. On an incline, brake and gear.
If parked at a level parking spot, besides a café, with nice girls in it, on a warm sunny day, I park it with its top down and in neutral so I can turn on the ignition before getting in :) |
I had a few SAABs. I am still programmed to put it in reverse when parking. SAABs only let you remove the key when it's in reverse. Always use the parking brake.
|
1st gear only, unless on a hill or putting the top up/down. In the winter emergency brakes can freeze here.
|
Always in Gear
I do not use e-brake parking in garage. Sits there many days and brakes tend to stick |
Parking brake and reverse for me in the garage, when parking outside the house it is usually parking brake and whatever gear I think I will drive off in, either 1 or R.
At the track, gear only and never the parking brake. I coast into my desired parking spot and shut off the engine with no foot brake or parking brake application. |
Always 1st gear
+ e-brake on a hill In the garage sometimes no gear, no e-brake ... lol |
Just curious. What is the logic for NOT putting the car in gear?
|
No reason to.
E-brakes are designed for that purpose. All of the "put it in gear" mania online is passed down from gramps and was valid 50 years ago or with cheap cars. I've heard all of the debate and none of it is convincing, just paranoia. There's also the potential damage to the trans and engine if you are bumped even slightly by another driver. If your e-brake isn't holding, fix it. Don't put a band-aid on the issue. ;) It just isn't necessary, but if it helps you sleep... |
Never in gear. I only use the e-brake in public. No gear or brake when in the garage or storage.
|
First gear - No E-Brake.
(Florida is flat) |
From the Porsche Boxster manual:
When parked, always set the parking brake. Move the PDK selector lever to ”P“ or the gear-shift lever to reverse or first gear. On hills also turn the front wheels toward the curb. I always use E-Brake and second gear. |
Think of 1st as "park." Exact same function.
If you have auto box, use park AND parking brake. |

(Sorry, that was from a really old post on another car forum.) |
Both gear and parking brake. You'd be mad to only use one safety precaution when you have two available.

There are no right or wrong answers, only opinions. Even the "experts" concede this. :) |

Only problem was, my Boxster rolled under a passing 'big' truck, and the trucks' tail gate lift frame dragged across the hood and frame. End story. my insurance totaled her, thank God that 'replacement value' has become the norm... Use your parking brake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 |

Do you park in gear?
Here is a good question, if you have an auto box, do you use the e brake as well? I find myself using it in any car I drive, just habit.
Something tells me that if I got a 981 pdk I would not use the brake just to spite the fact that it isn't a proper lever haha. |
