2016 Boxster Spyder
 

As rumored, it got the 3.8 and 375 HP (always -10 from the Cayman) but it didn't get the new GT4 suspension. Still looks good.....less is more, unless you want A/C or a radio.

Personally, if I didn't have the $90,000+ (which I don't!) I'd still go for a Box GTS or a soon-to-be-further-depreciated 987 Spyder.

I was lucky enough to get an invite to the Porsche preview Friday morning at the NY Auto show. Maybe it won't be snowing by then!

It's great! Manual only, almost 400 bhp, has the coolest bucket seats ever, and not any of the infotainment crap that I hate about 9X1 cars!

The new front end for this and the GT4 is killer, but something about the 981 rear does not translate *as* well into a spyder.

(Maybe I miss the stripes!)

I don't think this going to help the resale of the 987 Boxster Spyders. This new top seems a lot more practical and this is a huge bump up in power.

Everyone thought the 987 spyder was the last of its kind.

You were right though, about them sand bagging it. With less horsepower than the GT4, it's only .1 second to 60 slower, and despite missing some of the gt4 bits I bet it's similar on a track.

I'll be curious to see just how good those GT3 bits are. Because a difference of 10 HP is negligible given that the Boxster Spdyer has lower COG and probably less curb weight overall. Even with that some reviewers have said the GT4 still understeers more then they apparently expected. There is no getting around the advantage of a roadster in lower center of gravity when coupe and roadster have equal power.

In addition to the GT3 steering and suspension, The Cayman GT4 also has a completely different body shell than regular Caymans. Smaller steering wheel too. And of course (almost forgot) the GT4 has the picnic table on the rear trunk, while the Boxster Spyder here can get on with it with just a duck bill. The 2015 Boxster Spyder just needs some of those giant 16" brakes.. or maybe not if the lap isn't too technical.

I think it is fantastic looking, with a little more "evolution" in it (roof seems not to be electric, but more convenient than the 987 spyder).

Although the Boxster 981 in general looks waaaay more "edgy" (not really my cup of tea) or lets say has "less curves" than the 987 and especially the 986, this Spyder is the ONLY Boxster variant I would consider buying ever since my 986.

Design-wise: 911 GT3 RS, 981 Spyder, Cayman GT4 ...my taste, in that order and than my 986 with speedster humps ;)

Not sure how I feel about the ducktail.....doesn't seem to flow with the hoops. But maybe it's just the angle of the pictures, looks better when it's raised. For some reason the fixed 987 lip looks better to me.

The manual top looks to be improved, but only saves 22 lbs?

Love those seats...looks like they are optional.

OK, I take it back...the duck looks good now that I've seen a few more pics. Though it would be interesting to see what a larger fixed spoiler would look like, as I still like it raised...might look like a baby Carrera GT.

Yes for a track car the GT4 would be the one to get, but for the street I love to put the top down so in that role I would pick the Spyder.

Exactly! Top down is really nice when traveling. On track? How often really? I'll opt for spyder...

other "lesser" models as this spyder does not seem to be as minimalistic as the previous generation (full door panels/handles/folding top/etc). I think these cars look really good in white too, I just would want black wheels and some side "spyder" decals for the side like the 987 version.

Seems to me that the Spyder is the car to have for the track for weekend DE warrior. Other than safety for a taller driver, I don't see how the coupe variant is a better performer than the roadster variant. The Spyder will afford you more experimenting with the racing line (more grip everywhere) and maybe more importantly, will be easier to keep on that line than the Cayman GT4 with that extra weight on the part of the car you want it least. My guess is that the 981 Spyder will simply the more toss able car of the two. You can tweak the suspension and go for the lighter wheels, stickier tires in the aftermarket to whittle the GT3 parts advantage to some degree. And I imagine some weight shavings has been undertaken over a standard GTS or S variant, so just gravy on that end

if 320 HP on the 987 Spyder is a 1:41 at Laguna Seca, what is 375 HP with a wider front plant going to register?

It would be cool to see a head to head lap time comparison between the Spyder and the GT4. I'm guessing the GT4 will be quicker but it will be interesting to see how close the Spyder can come.
