The 718 RSK had these slots. 1958 I believe.

The race car shown in post #14 looks like a 550 with a 718 style back.
The 718 RSK had these slots because of better air intake. The 718 was a pure race car.
As far a i know the stock 550 Spyder never had these slots.
Found this picture - named RS Spyder #44. But that also seems to be a 718.

I was aware that it was a replica; I was just looking for a good pic that showed the rear engine venting. from what I can tell the vents as shown were used on the 550 and rsk. probably a later thing that got introduced into the 550 as it got developed in racing and the rsk evolved. my point was that the boxster was intended from the get-go to have styling cues from the 550, rsk and 904. *I think* the original post was an effort to bring another of these styling cues to the boxster. for this I applaud the guy. I think they could have been better executed, but the fabricator was probably limited to the oem opening size and location. still, more vents, punched instead of cut, might be better.
for some folks the box is a ragtop dd. for some it is a track toy. for some it is a cheap tuner car with a bit more pizzazz than a crx or 350z. for others it is a vintage-style roadster, and the more vintage it looks/is, the better. to all their own.

Those slots work with the lines and where they put the slots on the original car. It just looks odd on a boxster.

Exactly. I love the retro styling of the car and at this point it's a classic in its own right. Nothing else on the road looks like it. The modern boxsters have made a strong effort to look modern with large scoops and such, which works on the cayman. But the new boxster looks like a ferrari (not complaining, but it got away from the retro roots.)
The slats are not perfectly executed, but the original side vents on the boxster are IMO the worst bit of the styling. (Hence it was not part of the concept.) The boxster is sort of jetsons, at the time it was seen as the future through the past, the promotional material for the concept all applauds the car as the future as well as the past. However, that future never came as safety regulations and turbos have hiked up the front ends of porsches and added buldges and longer track.
The smooth rear lines of the boxster are really hard to find in any car, mine is debagded even to further accent this.
So I like the gills, I think they make the car even more retro/futuristic, and undoubtably unique.

I i agree with you there Jake, i also find them a pain when cleaning as soon as i've dried the the car water runs out from them down the panel. I can't make my mind up on the 'shark gill' look, but i do think it has a cleaner look than the originals.
I wonder what other designs/ideas would work instead.
EDIT:-
