My new stitched in rear plastic window

Certainly a popular topic of sticking with the original top and a new plastic window or going with a new top and glass window. Here's my result of paying somebody to stitch in a new window!

Looks real nice and bigger for some reason.

patssle 03-27-2015 04:17 PM

I assume they cut out the existing stitched area as it wouldn't be ideal to re-use. That certainly extends the window 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in each direction.

Hmmm where are the links for buying the plastic?

Pdwight 03-27-2015 05:03 PM

Everything looks bigger on a computer monitor

BUt it does look quite a bit bigger

Window Material

Everything you could need - and plenty of tips.

That looks GREAT! May I ask what the total cost was? Did you buy the material and take it somewhere?

I paid $100 for the window and $650 for labor. He quoted me $150 to sew in a new window if I took the top off myself. I strongly considered it but I'm terrible with fabric and I read the instructions 20 times before deciding.

Looks great!

Size-wise, it looks the same as mine. This is why I always vote "no" on the tiny glass window. ;)

Yeah the reduced visibility of the glass. Plus I work on my car myself - I don't want reduced engine area access.

Here are a couple close-ups of the stitching.

BFeller,
Great link to clear window plastic.Thank you.
Which of the linked plastics did you select and why?

DG Boxster 03-28-2015 02:49 PM

That's really great. What type of place did the work? I'm in Albuquerque and would love to find somewhere to help me put in a new window.

So it was $650 for labor but would have been $150 labor if you took the top off yourself. What instructions did you read?

Look for an upholstery shop that also specializes in auto tops. The shop I used does convertibles of all makes and models.

This was a great write-up: http://images.wikia.com/boxster/images/e/eb/DIY_Boxster_Conv_Top_Canvas_R_R.pdf

That is a really nice result. Congrats!

After changing to a top w glass window I would never go back though. Best mod I ever did to my car.

I did not use any of the plastics. I have a boat and Sail Rite is a supplier to the canvas industry.
