This one says it's purple, so I think it is Viola Metallic. Yes, it has high mileage and needs a little TLC, but it's VIOLA METALLIC. That alone is worth $5k or so.

Looks like it comes with hard top and a lot of extra parts.

Too many miles?

How many miles is too many miles for these M96 engines? I found what may be a good deal but it has 172,000 miles. Everything else I see out there is around 60k-100k but most owners seem to be over asking.

Anker 07-18-2017 10:38 AM

The highest I have heard is just over 300,000 miles, and that was a car that was tracked extensively.

What's over asking? Mileage is important but at the age these cars are at maintenance is much more important. If there is proof of maintenance throughout the years the the Boxster in question is likely a better candidate then a low mileage garage queen that has had little done over the years. Keep in mind there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. You going to pay now or later with later generally being more expensive.

rczap 07-18-2017 12:38 PM

I bought my 2002 Red S with 194k miles on it last year. No maintenance records to speak of and the CEL on. Put 3k into the cam chain adjuster and drive it like I stole it. Still going with 204k miles now. Paid 5900 for it and keep up with my 911 buddies in their 40k cars!

The one I looked at this weekend was a 2002 Boxster S with 66,000 miles that he wants $12,000 for. The only records he had were oil changes from a Jiffy Lube type place. He said he bought the car from an auction and has had it for 5 years, putting 16,000 miles on it. He only has one key, no windscreen, and the tires that came with it. He has also never heard of an IMS bearing. I figure I'd have to drive it straight to my local Porsche expert and get the following:

IMS bearing
New clutch
Replace the rear main seal
Four new tires.

Then, I'd want to do the following:

Add the wind deflector
Replace the missing cruise control cap
Add a magnetic drain plug
Replace the dented spoiler cap
Replace both drop-down window switches
Order a new owner's manual (if possible)
Program a new key

I calculated all those to add up to about $5,500 - $6,800, assuming nothing else was discovered during a PPI.

I'm also hesitant to buy from someone who owned it for 5 years and didn't know they had a rear spoiler that extends at high speeds (I showed him how to put it up).

That's a pretty good testimony!

This does not sound like a 12k car. I'd expect A LOT of records from a caring owner for that price. Locally, this would be a $9-10k car at best.

That's more in line with what I was thinking. I told the guy a good set of records was worth a lot with these cars and his response was that he hasn't had any issues yet...

Yes, looking at Zenith Blue Metallic, I agree.... It isn't as dark as most of the Viola Metallic pictures.
Here's the one I was thinking of and it may not be V-M either:

Actual V-M:

But still, "It is a color that changes hue depending on how the light is reflected. At some angles it appears blue, black or purple and all three."

That's a fair market price.
I suspect you'll be looking for a long time for your holy grail deal of a lifetime.

Even with no maintenance records?

sugarwood 07-19-2017 06:13 PM

How many service records does a car with 66k really have?
Sure, records are great, but are they a deal breaker?
Why not assume there has been NO work done, and the car ran flawlessly from day one.
What do you think it's now worth?

If I bought that car with 66k, I would
Replace all fluids (diff, brake fluid, oil, coolant, steering, gearbox)
Spark plugs, air filter, belts, hoses.

There's your service history you'd have anyways.
Now, it's all current for $300.

Javi Cooper 07-19-2017 07:37 PM

66k miles is a long way to go without an oil change. Just sayin'...

You are correct; my bad. I was able to duplicate the screen shot with my wife's Cayman.

But it illustrates a point I've made before; if one wants to successfully sell a Porsche, at least consider how the pictures will look to prospective buyers. A myriad of warning lights doesn't look good. Neither do these actual pictures of Porsche dashes displayed in ads:

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1500527746.jpg

Stationary........and 1000 RPM above redline.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1500527763.jpg

Oil level below minimum.

Just sayin'.............

itsnotanova 07-20-2017 04:25 AM

$12000 for an S with only 66,000 miles is an okay deal in Texas. I've seen lower and higher for an equivalent S.

What are the odds of someone buying a $50,000 sports car and never changing the oil ?

Like I said, he's not wrong, but I suspect he will be looking for many years for his perfect unicorn.

This one was more of a fixer upper. I added up everything that would be needed to replace missing pieces, fix defective parts, and change the IMS bearing and clutch, and was looking at between $5,500 - and $6,800 worth of work. I'm totally fine paying $12k or more for a 2002 S with around 66,000 miles on it. I just wouldn't pay that much for this one.

I will not sell it unless you understand what kind of car you are buying.

LOL, yea, a totaled parts car with the door ripped off ?

How about an original 46 year old replica of a Porsche 917 made by Lazer? Yours for only $5,000, motor needs to be rebuilt.

Test Drive

I just test drove a 99 that I found on Craigslist and it had mouse poop in the frunk and trunk. Think I'm gonna pass...

If you're too lazy to vacuum mice droppings up before showing your car what else are you neglecting? :(

I can't unsee these wheels

It's not even an "S" model. That is what I feel the value of my 2004 Special Edition is worth. And mine is in better condition. Subtract the wheels and it's probably around $18k which is still kind of high.

paulofto 08-02-2017 06:10 AM

Those wheels look ridiculous. There should be a discount if they are included.

PaulE 08-02-2017 06:39 AM

I think $15k is generous for a clean 04 base with 30k miles - it probably still needs a water pump, serpentine belt, plugs and coils, an IMSB replacement, tires for the stock wheels and a brake fluid flush.

amagalla 08-02-2017 07:55 AM

Way too much for that car (especially with those wheels and the Tip. Trans).
