AOS failure questions

I was about 15 miles from home yesterday when my AOS failed. Managed to limp on home. Confirmed failure by disconnecting the hose to the intake and blocking it off. Performance returned and smoke disappeared. However, while burning off the remaining oil in the exhaust, I notice a small puddle of oil under the car. Maybe about 1/2 cup. Is this normal with an AOS failure?

So I am going to order a new AOS. I've read the DIY's about replacing it. I don't have the hose clamp pliers for the bottom hose. Would it be better to buy the pliers or just cut the hose and buy a new one? Anything else I should buy? Thanks!
