Unhappy Gear Problem!!

Dear all,

I drive a 03' manuall boxster s.

Last night i was driving and everything was normal. However i parked my car for a while "engine still on" then when i put the car into the reverse gear it went forward instead of back.

That shocked me and i noticed that the shift stick became kinda loose. There was no resistance in the gateway between neutral and reverse.

Then i move the stick through all the other gears and played around with clutch and everything went back to normal!!!

This happened to me again later that night and everything went back to normal again.

I would really appreciate it if someone has any idea what could have happened.

I'm worried it could be a serious problem.

Thanks.

You were in 1st gear instead of reverse then. Your transmission has shifter forks inside of it. THe reverse gear is on its own fork with a straight cut gear near the bottom of the pinion shaft. If your level is truely in reverse the car can not go forward as the rest of the gears spin on the shaft together all the time but are not engaged. Only reverse is engaged and it's impossible for the shafts to spin the other way.

More or less what you need to do is shift into 1st gear first then goto reverse, this will stop you from doing what you did.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the info. I think i understand what you're saying. However the samething happened again today. Is it possible that i have a problem with the shifter forks?

Thanks and regards.
