996 getting close to 986 prices ?
this car is for sale down the street from me . i decided to stop in and take a look . as i already own a 996 i was curious. this car was in really good condition and has some really nice options . The wood is gross but overall a nice car . you could probably get this car for 18k that is real close to 986S prices . Curious to know what others up here think about low priced 996s ? 2001 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA COUPE , 74K MILES, 6-SPD, MUST SEE!!!!

Looks nice although I could do without the funky wing (just personal taste, looks like a Subaru). You're right, the faux wood is gross! I'd say it is still 5K more than a same year 986S, and the motor is in the wrong place!

I say one hell of a deal considering the GT3 body kit. But I agree, the wood is gross

A fair amount of 98 and 99 911s have been listed for a few under 20 latly, which is comparable with 03 and 04 boxsters base or S. It'll make the buying process tough for some. Do you want the bigger power and the "worst 911" or a great mid engine roadster with polarizing styling and a "lack of power."
As an aside most affordable 996s I have seen have been cabriolets.

If you see a '98 for under $20K, scoop it up. It was the last year of the 993s.

I must be mistaken, the car was a 996, must've been a 99, I know for a fact the car was a 90s model though.

I agree about the wood. That spoiler is gross too! I wouldn't mind having the back seats so my wife could come along when my dog and I go for a ride.

Jake, the Boxster came in 97, but the 996 didn't show up until 99. A 98 boxster for 20,000 would be like investing in apple for 3 bucks a share.

That is a hella nice 996. Lots of options and good miles. It was probably a $100k+ sticker car when new. The aerokit by itself adds $10k to the car. For you guys that don't know, that aerokit w/ the taco spoiler is the body kit that was on the first year GT3 that was introduced in Europe.
There is nothing wrong with the 996. They have fantastic performance and their reliability and potential maintenance problems are the same as the Boxster. If you love your Boxster, you will love a 996.
I own a '99 996 with the aerokit. I paid $19,300 for mine w/ 85k miles. It was/is worth every penny and then some.

The worst 911??? Where do you get that from? The 996 is a great car and when it was new it was ground breaking in technology and performance.
Have you ever driven one?
If the 996 is the worst 911, then the 986 is the worst Boxster as well....
Don't buy into the negative hype, if so I guess you like driving the cheap hair dresser Porsche
I think the wood is a factory option, not aftermarket
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. YMMV
I have seen 996 (non-roller) listed for as low as $12k

I love the 996 hence why I put worst in quotations. The car is perceived styling wise as the ugly duckling, but this allows great performance to be bought for a great possibly unmatched price, I can't think of many cars with comparable performance and prestige to the 911 available under 20k.
I have never seen any for anything like 12k, it'd be hard for me not to upgrade to a 911 if one comes by for that price.

I think Tom paid that or less for his 996 and it's a very nice car. They are out there. There's a 996 Cabriolet in Wichita Ks for $14 that looks like a nice ride.
I'm seeing Boxsters in the $4-6k range...

Agreed. The early 996 models get no respect, just like the 914 and 924 when they were first introduced.
A clean '99-'01 model with an IMSB upgrade can be a fine example of a 911.

Hey, let's not forget this $10K 996 - its still parked in my driveway. Very low priced 996's are out there; you just have to look a little harder and show up with a stack of cash.
