Radio Killed Convertible Top
Need some help with this one. Had Best Buy put in a new stereo to replace the factory one. Now the convertible top does absolutely nothing. What's your thoughts?
|
1st choice: fuse
2nd choice: Bad microswitch |
1st choice: go back to Best Buy and raise hell. If they can't fix it then they should be paying the bill for someone else to do it. They probably just knocked the connector off the back of the switch
|
should not have had Best Buy touch your Boxster!
Check the convertible top switch and make sure the connector is pushed on all the way |
If you pull the parking brake, does the light on the dashboard light up? if not then it could be the parking brake switch. Unsure how that could get touched/bumped during an install but it is a common cause of the top magically stopping to work.

My guess would be that they did not ground (tape back) the anti-thief contact when they took out the OEM head unit.
I had a similar experience when I replaced mine, slid the new unit out a few inches and taped back, located on the lower left hand side of unit. |
I think Mark T hit on it. I bet they removed the "horseshoe" around the radio, and disconnected all the switches. If they neglected to put the connector back on, or put the connectors back on wrong, your top operation switch wouldn't work.

So went back to best buy and they couldn't find the problem. Noticed the brake light not coming on either. Could they have messed up the wiring or unpugged it while installing stereo or is it a freek coincidence that ir went out the day after the new radio. Also, I wiggled the emergency brake a lot and no light which I heard you can normally do before it goes out completely. What do you think?

Buy a Comfort Top module and bypass the switch on the E-brake altogether.

Boxster Projects | Parking Brake Sensor Switch
http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/6978-parking-brake-switch.html There's a couple more out there, and if you do have to remove the center console the instructions from one of the short shifters has the best guide, but one link above suggests you don't need to remove the whole center console... Good luck! |
