Really, it seems to be going between the extremes though. I'm sure there a plenty of affordable dd's that aren't a chore behind the wheel or drive you to the poorhouse in maintenance costs. Get a Jetta TDI and revel in the 50 mpg. And the backseat.

I get high 30's low 40's from my 2006 Jetta TDI (6 speed DSG auto - RocketChip tune) on the same commute I use my Boxster for today. About 70 miles at 80+ mph on a toll road per day. Lower speeds would help. My brother who has a 2006.5 TDI (5 speed manual - "custom MPG tune") gets low 50's on the highway at 65 mph. YMMV

My Boxster is my daily driver! I drive 70 or so miles to work and back daily, some highway and some city traffic so it's a decent mix. Like BigJake111 was saying, get one with character. My Boxster has a transmission filter issue (when the transmission fluid is cold it has a bit rough time going through the filter when I'm driving normal). But if I drive it like I stole it, it works perfect. So it makes for an enjoyable drive to work. I say go for it! You'll enjoy it for sure!

I'm taking the day off Monday to get my weekend warrior it's annual service. The shop in the meantime is arranging to pick up the DD candidate for a thorough PPI. If it doesn't pass, I'm sure another candidate will soon come along. Amazing how often a halfway clean Boxster will pop up for under 7 grand. That's like... Used Taurus territory.

The $4,700 Boxster in question...
Lots of "character". It has a green interior, which ive never seen before, and you can see the dent over the rear wheel, and the other one on TOP of the front fender. Curious how this damage occurred. It's almost as if it spun out into a light pole, which then fell onto the car. (SRS light is also on.
Drives surprisingly well though, with everything functioning properly.

Nephrite Green interior. Actually, the most expensive interior option for the early 986's
A paintless dent repair guy could probably take the dent out for a few hundred. I would definitely get a PPI, and plan to spend a few thousand on repairs the first year. It's cheap for a reason.

I love the green interior! The guy that I bought my wheels from this weekend had a white Boxster with that green interior. I had never seen one in person and I really dug it.

Haven't run a carfax on it yet, but plan to, although honestly I find those less useful the older a car is. There's too much that can happen to it outside of the carfax blanket. Still interested in seeing what it says though. I'll see what the PPI turns up. It's going to be $300, a little higher than most, but very invasive and thorough. (pulling the oil pan, timing cover, etc are included).
The color combo isn't my favorite, the green being a bit off-kilter with the silver, but it is interesting and gives it even more character.
This car has been on one of those "we-tote-the-note" lots for a couple of months now. It started at $5,900 and has been steadily dropping. I'd guess that the surface condition of the car (being a little rough) and the fact that the typical clientele is more interested in $1500 pickups and Hondas is what's scaring people off of it.
It's not unusual around here for fairly clean examples of Boxsters to crop up in the $6,500-$8,000 range, so no love lost if this one doesn't work out.

My wife had one of these with white exterior -- it's pretty sharp looking actually.
