Transmission fluid
I have been trying to find a supplier of either swepco 201 or Mobile 1synthetic 75/95w gear oil in the montreal quebec region. If anyone knows who sells it in this area I would appreciate the help.

I changed my gear lube to Mobil 1 75w90 last summer..... and deeply regretted doing so. It was almost impossible to shift into 2nd for the first 20 minutes of driving and all the other gears were stiff as well. To be honest, I've used Mobil 1 for 20 years believing it was the best money could buy. I still use it in the engine - but not the transaxle.
I can't speak for the Swepco but I went back to the OEM Porsche lube and immediately the problems went away. IMO, stay with the Porsche stuff - even if it's a few dollars more. |

I've had no issues refilling with factory fluid, unlike some experimenters. It's just not worth the hassle. |

On the topic....where's the best place to buy the OEM Fluid?

Woah...wait....pffffffffft....(brain matter blowing out of ears)...$400+ for the fluid??? <massive cursing> Are you kidding??!!!
Ugggh...the thing is...I'll do it just because it's cheaper than replacing the tranny after too many gear grinds. Ugh. Jabbing coat-hanger end in eye now. Jeeeze. |
Call me whatever but I think I'll give this a shot. Can't be worse than the Swepco. :-/

The gearbox only takes 2.8 litres ...... |
I called one dealer here in there area and he told me that they put in Mobil 1 in all there cars. I was under the impression that is what Porsche uses in their transmissions.

Porsche ~ $32/qt x 3 = $96 Not worth the $50 savings, believe me......ultimately you'll be dumping the Mobil in a drain pan and putting in the Porsche stuff anyway (and paying a combined $50/qt) |

I am replacing the trans fluid in both the Boxster and the 996 in two weeks. Will use Porsche OEM fluid from the dealer.

+1 on Suncoast for the gear oil. Its great they sell by the liter. I checked another dealer in FL, along with a dealer outside DC while on travel and both offered the gear oil only in 20 Liter containers!

Early this year I had the transmission repaired by a local well respected shop. The repair went flawless and the transmission was filled with Redline synthetic gear oil, This was all done before I purchased the car so I have no baseline to judge. But in my opinion the transmission shifts very well EXCEPT when you first drive it in the morning. Shifting is slightly balky until a little heat is built up. I'm going to drive her for 5k or so and will switch to OEM fluid to see if there is a difference.

If you are on the west coast.....try Sunset Porsche (not Suncoast Porsche) in Portland OR. I got my Porsche gear lube for IIRC $27 a liter there. They don't have an online store so you have to request a quote. https://sunset.porschedealer.com/parts/parts_order.php

I use Royal Purple. I find the crunching is reduced if upon starting the car and before you take off, shift to neutral and let the clutch out to warm up the tranny for while. In my case my 2001 2.7 using Royal Purple works better than the OEM.
