New 2001 Boxster S owner, 60K service question

Hi all

Just picked up a 2001 Boxster S about 2 weeks ago. Have been lurking on this forum for a few months, but first time posting. So firstly I wanted to say hello and to say thanks for all the helpful info on this site. Although I am no stranger to German cars having owned many VWs, Audis and BMWs, this is my first Porsche. This site really helped me in my research. This will be my fun/weekend car (my DD is a BMW 335i M-sport w/ 8AT) mainly because there are times I really miss driving stick. So figured why not a convertible.

Here are details of my car.

2001 Boxster S with 6MT, 58000 miles.
-Lapis Blue, Metropol Blue top
-Graphite grey interior
-Sport Touring pkg
-Design pkg
-Digital audio with DSP and 6-cd changer
-18" Turbo-look wheels
-Litronic xenons w/ headlight washers
-Self-dim mirrors & rain sensor wipers
-Heated seats pkg
-Power seat pkg w/ seat memory

I purchased from a local Lexus dealer. Car was a trade-in with only 1 prior owner and clean Carfax. The car also came with 90-day/3000 mile warranty as well. Score!

I did have one thing that I would like some opinions on. As the car has 58K miles, I am definitely planning on 60K service very soon at a local Porsche specialist shop in Silicon Valley area. Am thinking also at that time to have clutch and IMS work done (dealer did not know if PO had done IMS/RMS work or not). However, given the 3K warranty coverage, wanted to know thoughts on holding out on the service until closer to the end of the warranty period or doing the work now at 58K miles (dealer warranty will not cover if things are found while getting the service done). Apparently the car has fresh oil change which the dealer did as part of their reconditioning before selling. So no concerns there. Would you jump in and do the work now or wait until closer to warranty expiration?

Thanks in advanced.

BTW, here are some pics of my new ride.

Great looking car.

I personally would enjoy some warranty, drive it like you stole it, then make your 60k fixes. Check water pump, AOS for any sign of oil on vent tube, and serp belt.

Enjoy!

Very nice car

With some great features, I wish mine had the auto dimming mirror. Her is what I would do , get a oil change like right now (regardless of when the oil was changed) install a magnetic drain plug and drive it like crazy for at least 1500 miles and check the drain plug for any debris larger than fine powder....if you find any you have something going on in your engine. Do this while under warranty

This, and cut open your oil filter you remove. Inspect the inside in the folds for anything.

Thanks for the tips. Am ordering magnetic drain plug and oil filter from Pelican Parts. Hopefully should be able to get that done later this week. Keeping my fingers crossed that oil filter is clean.

That is a nicely optioned car. When new it would have been north of $60,000.

Indeed the car was originally 61K when new. PO had original window sticker as well.

Garage
Drive it and enjoy the warranty. I bet you will put more miles on it in a short amount of time than the PO did. If something is going to go it just might happen in the next 3 months.

PS - the 335i M-sports makes for a nice daily driver. I have the same car in x-drive.

Agree that 335i makes a great DD. It is certainly faster than my Box. Very fun to drive DD especially with the MPPK installed, though I can say that the Box is even more fun to drive. Nothing like rowing your own gears (except when stuck in traffic). As for driving it while under warranty, I certainly plan to do that. But I do think the oil change and magnetic drain plug makes sense. Ordered online and should have shipment in couple days. So maybe will work on that over the weekend.
