Nope. I do remember it from my youth when looking at swapping out engines because of emissions equipment. That was one of the great things about owning an older muscle car - you could always get a better engine. But, you couldn't go backwards.

I suppose it's possible that they are more relaxed on that issue or have exceptions - but I doubt it. It would be too hard to regulate. Think about it, they're not going to allow you to put a '65 engine into a 2006 vehicle.

If I had the time I'd look into the regs...

Lesson learned for the day...don't put an older motor into a newer car...and don't remove those tags from your mattress! Big Brother is watching you!

Depends on the state and this is tied to emissions.

In CA, it is actually a felony to violate the state smog laws. This precludes an older engine/newer car swap unless the car is 1975 or older.

I wish the state was as serious about illegal immigration as it is smog.

So far as my research goes, you could actually install this Engine in a '97, '98, or '99 Boxster. There were no changes to the Fuel, Exhaust, or DME Engine Management between these years. I suspect that Porsche produced these Model Years under the same, or re-issued, EPA Cert.

But, beginning in '00, there were substantial changes making the swap both illegal and impractical due to the e-Gas, DME, Exhaust and Fuel System Changes...

Engine Changes


Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:


The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.

The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.

If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine

It's not a question of if it could be installed... even an identical spec engine is illegal to install in America if it is from a model year prior to the year of the chassis it is being placed in. Granted many things that tuners do to cars are also illegal but this can result in hefty fines, especially if a dealer is caught doing it.

I would be pretty upset to find out I bought a used car with an engine that was 5 years older than the car without my knowledge.

Happens more often then you think. Anyone here ever been pulled over or even ever had the casting number of the motor checked on there car or truck. I have never heard of this. I realize it is a epa rule but never heard of it being enforced. In ohio even when you buy a car out of state the only thing they check is the vin in the window.
