How rare is this 986?

Hey all! Picked up a '98 Boxster a few years ago and I've always wondered, but never took the time to find out.. How rare is this color/combo? Hardtop, what seems to be factory wheels just based off the Porsche center caps and Brembo brakes. Previous owner honestly didn't know much about it.. $9,000 5spd 57k miles

Ocean Jade Metallic - 60/J3

Anyone know how many were made? Or what they're going for market value?

Thanks!

nice looking car

I have never seen the color. You got yourself a unique car for used economy car money.

That's what I think too, I know I'm way ahead, but I've always wondered how far!

PorscheBound 06-14-2014 02:42 PM

My guess is that it was resprayed. You can take the Vin and call any Porsche Dealer and they would be able to tell you the original color.

You can also just look at the paint code in the frunk.

J3 Ocean Jade metallic was available in 1998.

Yeah it's the original color, I've ran the VIN on it. I found one other thread about it, and a a guy was asking the same thing. His was a clothtop, and said he had "heard" there's only 47 of them in the US. Just trying to get some input from others, I've got no clue

particlewave 06-14-2014 03:15 PM

It's definitely the first I've ever seen.
Very nice color ;)

Squozen 06-14-2014 03:27 PM

I've seen several in Australia (even rented one!).

Here's my '99 I bought a few weeks ago ($9500). Ocean Jade Metallic was a listed color option for '98-'99 ($805 extra). Mine came from Arizona by way of Texas and is now in SW Okla. 86K miles. It has the Sport Package w/ the Sport Design wheels (Sport seats, upgraded interior, 3 spoke wheel, etc) and a few more goodies. I see very, very few early Boxsters w/ sport seats and optioned like this.

I bought it for the color and the interior package. Not a whole lot of Boxsters like this and I didn't have one in my fleet. Now I do! :D I don't know how rare the color is, but yours and mine make only 2 that I've seen in the wild.

Now when I find a nice Zanzibar Red 986, I'll be mostly complete. Except I've always wanted a Forest Green w/ Boxster Red leather interior. Then I'll be rare color combo complete. Maybe...

***If you are selling yours, consider selling me the hard top separate? Seriously - I'll grab it from you for more $ than it adds to the value of your car by having it. PM me if you are interested.

I've got the sports package as well. But I'm hanging onto the hardtop for sure! We'll just go with 3 known to mankind

BIGJake111 06-14-2014 05:10 PM

I have never seen one even listed before, same for the wheels.

Tpierce129 06-14-2014 05:23 PM

Only picture I have right now, but here's a vague shot of the interior

Is that djlomas old car?

RedTele58 06-14-2014 06:33 PM

It's interesting that both uncommon color cars have the same uncommon interior package. I wonder if maybe our cars were dealer demo cars to show off some options. Since these are before the "S" package cars were available, I'm guessing they were top of the line cars for their model year.

I've only seen this color two other times, both on an early 996. One was several years ago on one of the on-line cars for sale web sites, the other is sitting wrecked in the salvage lot at Oklahoma Foreign, a Porsche salvage yard in Oklahoma City. Interestingly enough, both cars had the Nephrite Green interior (which I, for one, really like) like is on the Arctic Silver Boxster in the For Sale listings.

I like one-off color combo's - they make our cars more interesting. I have a line on an '03S Boxster, Arctic Silver, that was special ordered with a Lipstick Red interior (lipstick red was predominately a '80s - early '90s 911 and 928 interior color - very bright red) and is hard-loaded w/ the Sport Touring and the Sport Design package among other options. It only has 26K miles and is flawless. The owner knows to call me first when he puts it up for sale.

I saw an early Boxster on eBay a few weeks ago that was a dark blue with the Boxster Red interior. I saw that same exterior/interior combo on a 356 awhile back- beautiful!

I think the 986 cars that were sold in the Europe market had a lot more "unique" color options.

I wonder how much they'd go for? Difficult to judge without a market value

I honestly don't think that in most cases the unique colors or additional options add much dollar value to our cars, and I think some colors, interior/exterior combos may turn some people off.

For me, the color was what closed the deal. If it was just another Guards Red, Black or Arctic Silver car (of which I have all 3), I wouldn't even have looked twice at it. Being a unique color it caught my eye, but I honestly wouldn't have paid anymore for it. (But if it was a "normal" colored car, I wouldn't have bought it - so the color did make the sale.)

It's hard to tell - there are so many 986 cars available, that unless you find a real knucklehead like me that lusts for the unusual, the average buyer won't care about the rarity of the color, only that they do/don't like the color (and what their wife/girlfriend has to say about it).

Well, um, err, uh... 5 Boxsters.

-2 1999's - the one above and a triple black (64k miles)
- 2000 2.7 (87k miles)- "The Slut" Silver w/ Boxster Red interior. She's my daily driver morphing into a DE/Autocross car.
- 2001 S (34k miles) - Guards Red w/ black interior
- 2002 S (74k miles) - Silver/gray interior

And, um, err...

- 1999 996 C4 black w/Boxster Red interior w/ factory aerokit - 84K miles
- 1990 944S2 cabriolet black/linen interior - 64K original miles - garage queen

^ those are all the drivers.

Projects:

- 3 1984 928S (they were/are my dream Porsche - just have to get them all together. Red/black interior, red, 2-tone brown interior and Pewter silver/burgundy interior)
- 1971 914 orange/black interior

That's 11. Sounds like a lot, but all together the cost is about 1/2 of what a new turbo 911 costs, and I know several guys with those. Or, a new 3/4 ton 4x4 truck, a boat, and a Harley, and every other $30k/yr redneck around here has that combo.

Plus I'm on the hunt for a 97-99 Boxster for a Spec racer. And a few other color combo Boxsters I want; Zanzibar Red/black, and Rain Forest Green/Boxster Red.

I've been driving/collecting Porsches for 30 years. I have a 30x60 shop and a big garage.

I'll amend that to be +great wife. + one awesome kid
And you can still
Have the best of both worlds...
I'll be at 9 (picking up our first street air cooled)
when we return from Europe on a family trip.

Probably more work than Rick but I'm lucky it has paid good dividends.
Helps if the wife likes great cars too.

Note my price to acquire all 9 would be less than that
Car, truck, boat combo. And that includes 4 track/race cars.

I'd say the important point is get your life in order, make sure the family is taking care of and ultimately comes first, than the toys and the 'permission' to enjoy them comes easier.

As rare as this color may be I saw a very clean example for sale on LA craigslist for only 6k had 77k miles on it a few months back- I didn't need another boxster but it was nice.

Yep, look up "djlomas" from Chicago.

I remember this car well. He did some really nice mods/writeups and was a great photog.

I saw ocean jade with nephrite green interior. Talk about a rare color combo.

A personal favorite colors are the Zanzibar red and the new metro grey metallic! But that is quite the collection, and the Harley boat statement is a way to put things that few think of.

LOL! Lovin it! Talk about an addiction. You have convinced me to purchase another boxster because they are such value for the money and why not have a spare?

Rick, your formula works, but having a wife that works and supports the hobbies also works, so (good education+good job+wife with good job +/-2 kids) = toys at mod level.

LOL! 5 Boxsters is not mod level toys.:cheers::cheers:

He put his heart and soul into that car. Took a zillion pics of it for the forum too because he was an amateur photographer.

You would have to be a forum member from five or eight years back to see these though. Not sure if they're still posted here.
