Help me price my Boxster for auction.

Just found out that we are pregnant with my FOURTH child so won't be using this car anytime soon, so might as well sell it. It sits in my extra garage 99% of the time already with only 3 kids, so It'll never get used now!

Anyway, thinking I'll post it on eBay but was curious on the best way to price it.

I can:

1) Stick a reserve on it and start at $0

2) Start the bidding at my reserve and see where it goes

3) Put a fixed price on it and then accept offers.

As a buyer, what is most appealing?


The car is a sub 80K mile car. 2002 2.7 w/5 speed.

Has a few extras: Avic DVD in dash (looks factory) and stainless aftermarket catback exhaust (Sounds awesome). 3M clear bra on front 1/3 of car. Great wheels and newer tires.

Exterior is Mint and Interior is Mint


Thoughts on what method to use and what is the fair selling price in today's market?

Never delt much with auctions but i think you are doing the right thing about selling the car as an auction. I have seen 1999s with a good many miles go for 15k on ebay. For some reason the ebay cars i have seen have been going well over market value.

I have sold many trucks and cars on EBay...

Regarding your options:

1.) Reserve and starting at 0. I like this as it builds excitement. People think they might get a great deal. This excitement fades as the reserve is typically so high and people loose interest.

2.) Start price at reserve: Not a good way to go. People never bid on these. You will be better off with another option.

3.) Fixed price/offers: Not a bad option

I have found many people are unrealistic in their pricing. If you truly want to move it, put it on ebay in the auction format, start at .01. Put the lowest possible reserve you can stand. Think of the ease of selling... you are moving the car with minimal effort. That's why I sell like this only I never put a reserve.

At the end of the day, I find I'm getting market value. Its usually lower than what I was hoping for but then I remember its gone, I have my cash and I didn't have to deal with tire kickers, lots of phone calls, etc.

Side note: After I list it, I do cross marketing. I put a link, discretely on my local Craigslist to get local people interested. Say "This will sell, very low reserve... baby on the way!!"

Either method OK. If you price it right, the "buy it now" could work out real well. As the bidding starts to get closer, someone will hit that button. The key is to not price it too high. As a bidder, I don't like reserve auctions as much.

Post lots of high quality pictures. You obviously have the skills to do it... That is the key.

That sure seems high...I'm thinking about doing $13,750 and then accepting offers.

I know that the wheels and Nav system don't add a lot of value (Even thought they are pricey to replicate) but I think the Mint condition along with those options help.

What's everyone's guess on a fair SELLING price? I don't want to get greedy, just sell it at a fair price.

As a buyer - no reserve. As a seller - no reserve. Gets lot of bidders and people know they are not wasting time and they put the auction end time on their calendars and jump in at the end. Add a buy it now for some fun.

I bought my Box S on an eBay auction...kept bidding in $1k increments until I hit the reserve, then sat and watched if others came in above me. Thankfully, I won the auction and paid a fair price on a 2 1/2 year old car for well under original sticker with 7900 miles on the clock.

No reserve is the way to go if you are serious about selling the car on eBay. As a seller, it can be tough to watch sometimes!

I've bought two three eBay cars had was very satisfied with the process. I have sold a half dozen iPhones with no reserve. Final pricing was very predicable from looking at closed auctions and the similarity of the items. Prices would be down around $50 until the last minute and end up around $300.

I'm going to vote against no reserve. What if you don't get a lot of exposure for whatever reason and someone snaps your lovely car up for a song? Not a lot of recourse unless you have a buddy helping with bidding.

I would also have a starting bid. I hate auctions that languish in the hundreds of dollars when you know it won't sell at that price. If someone is serious, they won't mind starting at $7K. I wish ebay would do a "swing for the fences" bid where you could raise your bid regardless of the current bid is and what the next bid will be (ie now at $100, next bid is $200, but my SFTF bid would take it to $7K). That would help cut through the crap.

All good ideas...I just listed it on the local CL until I get good pics for an auction.

I put it up for $14,250 so I have room for the negotiators.

If someone walks up with $13K it'll be gone...if not, we will see what it brings on eBay next week!

I've already had a couple guys asking to come see it, so maybe it'll go local.


Now, anyone looking for a Baja? The boat has to go, too!

Actually not that interested in this car, hopefully I can post a pic of me in a boxster by the end of the June.

most of these will show the number of 'hits' so you can track viewing activity for your ads - craigslist does not.

wow! i have to admit, that's about 3500-4000 over what i'd been expecting. guess my expectations are too low.
