Kaput goes the Tranny

So, I just received new that my transmission (along with my steering pump) is finished.
How much should I expect to pay for a rebuilt tranny and installation?
The Collection quoted me around 15k for the whole thing, the service advisor said just the tranny would run me 8k.
I have an 02 Boxster. I would appreciate your input.

If it's a 5 speed I paid 600 for my used trannny from eBay that works perfectly. I would go that route if possible

15k is robbery. You need to find another shop; plus, as others have said, source the tranny yourself (be carefull to get a decent rebuilt) and possibly a repair kit for the steering pump. A good shop will let you source the parts, but obviously they won't warranty anything other than the installation.
For $15K, I would do most of that work myself.

I'm sorry but how do dealers through out prices like that while sober?

Why wouldn't they just say "Your car is totaled".

Let's say 8 hours to remove and replace a transmission @ 100 hr equals $800.
$2k for a rebuilt 5 speed (high, I know) with a limited warranty. Let's add $200 for 'stuff'. You're at $3k.

IDK what the PS pump work costs but I'll bet it isn't as much as a tranny.

Are you serious? 100 an hour? If Honda charges 100 an hour what do you think a Porsche dealer charges?

And a porsche dealer charging 2k for a remanufactored tranny? Ford charges more than that for a reman tranny!

The prices you are quoting are just as ridiculous as the dealership. lol

If you have ever seen The Collection in Miami, you will know why. It is a museum, monument to the most expensive Marques, Ferrari, Maserati, Mc Laren, Porshe, Audi, Jaguar. Gorgeous models are at the reception desk. You never see a repair bay. Conspicuous consumption at its worst, or best, depending on your point of view.

Just a note:

Transmission:
The Audi A4 and VW Phassat have the same transmission as the Boxster…. The Bell housing is drilled for both. The only difference between the Porsche and these transmissions above is 2 and 3 gear are different in gearing. This may be an option for you to go with if your looking to save some coin.

15k is way too much. When I had to have my 2nd gear synchros redone in my 6sp, i also had a Guard torque biasing diff installed. I pulled the tranny and installed it, so that helped. The total rebuild was $4500...and I discovered later that I could have bought one from Gbox for the same cost.
Search eBay. There are at least 9 on there under 1k.

+1 and I'd seriously double check anything diagnosed by "The Collection".

You can buy another Boxster S for that

As a reference point I'm having my 6 speed being repaired for aprox. 2800.00. That is replacing 2nd gear ( broken tooth ) which is 500.00 by itself. New synchros on 1st and 2nd gear along with friction rings ( ? ) and whatever else needs to be done. When I was searching for a used transmission as an alternative to the rebuild I found quite a few 5 speeds for 750.00 so shop around. That shop is ripping you off big time please look elsewhere.

Thank you everyone for your input. I totally forgot to say I have a 2002 Tiptronic Base Boxster. I'm not gonna fix the car there, it's a ridiculous amount of money, but then, how much is a far price?
Sadly, Miami is a horrible city to own a P-car as there as barely any places who will work on them.

Rebuilt trans: $3-4k
Perfectly working Tip from a dismantler: $600-$900

Here are the best Porsche shops in SoFL. Ask your local PCA board member for a referral. An excellent resource.

My numbers were not based on Miami. They were based on realistic 'reasonable' pricing.

So double everything. It's still half of the qoute.

It hard to put the words 'Reasonable pricing, Porsche, and Dealer' in the same sentence, lol. Anything at a dealer level puts things at whole diferent level. I never said you can do it for a reasonable price. Its just going to be hard to find that at a dealer level.
