Massive Black smoke, towed to dealership, what the problem?

Hi
I was driving my 2007 Boxster home last night, heard strange whistling noise from engine whenever my foot was not on gas. Engine light goes on and off, then I realize massive amounts of smoke were coming out of back-end. Engine making more weird noises, I pull off highway and have it towed to Porsche dealership.
I see black oil leaked out from under back end of car onto the flatbed.

Now Porsche dealership is doing diagnostic, still trying to figure it out, they say oil is everywhere, in air filter, coming out of tailpipe, everywhere. Not sure where the leak is yet.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I'm thinking AOS failure.

I just got the answer, the oil vapor separator ruptured, and oil was pumped everywhere in the engine.

Sounds like he shut it down before any major damage happened (good call lurky), so he's probably in it for a new AOS and some major cleanup. I'm guessing about $800 -$1000 at the dealer?

Sounds like an AOS failure to me as well. Best of luck with the repairs. It is a possible DIY, but it is a major PITA to do.

If it is the AOS and there is no collateral damage that should be a $400ish repair. If they estimate more ask for details on the damage and the necessary work. If you don't like the answer take it somewhere else. I replaced my AOS in less than 2 hours and the next one would take less than an hour….

I bet it will go a little higher for that cleanup project.

When my AOS went it was a puff of white smoke out passenger side engine vent and oil dripping bad out bottom. Thankfully no other problems and I pretty much diagnosed it from this site, Thank you 986forum, and had a friend change it. Hopefully its a quick fix and bills not too big from dealer.

oil can get ingested by the engine, fill the cylinders and 'hydrolock'. if you take it far enough, the oil in the cylinder can't compress and rods break instead.

You can hydro lock (fill cylinder with oil)
Which does not compress and bends the rod.

I had one engine that did that. Amazingly,
Replaced the rod and all was good.

Of course that still meant a complete rebuild of the engine since your down to the crank anyways.

Best case you kill some Mosquitos & you have to swap in a new aos

Read a post bout a month ago where there was serious damage. Requiring much money to fix but besides that it was replace and drive to clear out rest of the residue. Is the really expensive replacement worth it? (1000.00 one) Guess so if you end up with major damage.
