Porsche Factory Rebuilt Engines On-Sale $14K

Thought this was interesting - factory rebuilt engines on sale. Time to clear out all of those rebuilt IMS bearing failures?

"No Core Charge"! that is an odd statement, I have never known Porsche to give anything away. By the way for you all, Porsche can charge up to $20,000. for the core.

A good clue that M96 remanufactured engines won't be available much longer

I forget which magazine it was, but they profiled this engine swap in one of their issues. A black 986S if memory serves. The shop said they would not do this again given the extensive costs and modificantions needed for the retrofit to work. Cheaper to just buy the 996 GT3 outright. And apparently the car needed an extensive suspension overhaul to get it feeling well balanced again.

I heard the same thing about a guy who put a 3.8 x51 into a cayman - too much squat when you get on the gas or somesuch.

Yes Porsche is running out of engines , they did not anticipate so many failures, they were all used in warranty cars. The 2.5s are gone, early IMS shafts are gone because there are two styles of timing chains used in the engine, you can't get the old style anymore.

Any of you guys want to put a group buy together? All jokes aside. This is a great oppurtunity for a 911 engine upgrade. What is the install cost roughly?

This is absolutely a clue that factory reman engines will not be available much longer. That said, paying $14k for a factory reman engine to stuff into a Boxster is something I wouldn't even consider. These motors are in no way better than what came in the car in the first place, and we all know how well many of those held up.

Auto Manufacturers have to supply replacement parts for 7 years minimum & all 986s are past that plus the IMSB lawsuit has been settled.

I agree. Such princely sums (relative to the cost of a used 996/986) seems better spent buying a Raby Engine.

I was thinking the same thing, if it wasn't for the "if it ain't broke" ideal, I would be seriously eyeballing this deal.

Even if the engine is kaput, I think a brand new reman engine is a bottom of the list option.
The output of a stock Carrera m96/97 engine is not a game-changer on this platform over a 3.4, certainly not for that price. Granted a two year warranty is nice, but the first two years are not really when you're going to have an issue. For that price they should give you 6, well maybe at least 4. I think the motor in my pricey blender has a better warranty... and it didn't cost $31K like that TT.

I am sure the M96 engines have been sitting around for years. The IMSB seals after sitting in break in oil for the last decade have turned hard and shrunk back and ripe for a failure.

I thought they kept in them in big industrial sized jars.
