Keysinthepost.com...anyone have better luck than I?

After six weeks and a couple attempts to have a key cut by keysinthepost.com, I'm giving up. I've read good things about them, but my experience has been the polar opposite. Communication is great and they seem very nice. :)

1st attempt: Did the photo thing. Uploaded a photo and received my key within four days. It did not work at all.

2nd attempt: Took pictures of the new key that they cut for me, along with my original key, showing the differences between the two and what they did wrong. The first key had two errors in the cut. This one has so many errors that I don't want to bother to count them, but at least a dozen.

I think I'm done trying that route
Anyone else have better luck? What method did you use? Did you mail your key in, or do the photo?

Sorry to hear that mate, 3x attempts is a major FAIL in my opinion. Was a good try anyway... now we know NOT to use them ;)

Got a blank key two years ago fom eBay and got it 'copied' by the key guy down the street. Most of them have the machine that trace the original and simultaneously cut the other. $5. Look in your Yellow Page and find a locksmith near you and he'll put you back on track.

Call your P car dealer and ask them where they get theirs cut is another idea.

I would send a soap bar impression.

I would take my experience as not typical because everything I've read gives them accolades. I'm not sure why they're having such a hard time with mine.

Tried Saverino locksmiths here(very well known, good rep, over 100 years in business). Said they couldn't cut this style with the center channel

Aristocrat Motors in KC can cut it, but they want an hour of labor and I promised myself I'd never go there again

Thinking of sending them my spare...just a little hesitant as its my only spare

So, my options are possibly Rennsport KC (not sure if they cut keys) or send my only spare to the UK. :(

Did you try Home Depot?

particlewave 09-20-2013 03:06 PM

No, I didn't think of that one. I tried Ace Hardware...no go.

Home Depot would be convenient as there is one just up the road...going now ;)

Ed Napleton at the site below will charge you $20 to cut the blank. You might want to send him an email or call. Cutting these keys seems to be a rare talent.

Home Depot was a no-go.

I'll shoot Ed an email. Thanks PL ;)

I need a spare blank and cut as well.

It just occured to me that perhaps I could use my milling machine.

If it was CNC it would be easy but perhaps I could transfer the pattern on to the blank somehow and cut manually?

I don't have any spare so I'm not leaving or sending my key off.

I was hoping I could photo copy the key and send for one online.

Where is a good place to get blank?

I found this link may help http://www.lockandkeyid.com/

I purchased a blank on eBay...you can find them pretty cheap there ;)

Sorry yours did not go well. They nailed mine first time perfectly.

Hi all,

My name's Ben and I run Keysinthepost.com. I came across this post, and wanted to follow it up to try and resolve any issues. I'm sorry hear one of our keys didn't work, we do offer a guarantee on all keys, and if (in the very rare circumstance) we can't get a key to work, we do offer a full refund.

As this is a mail order service, we do get the occasional key which doesn't work, if not it usually works second time. I think we've had under 5 Porsche/VAG keys which haven't worked in the last 3 years, and we send out around 50 a month - so not too bad a success rate!

Customer service is our absolute priority, so if anyone isn't happy with the service, then I want to make sure we make amends. Please rest assured that if you do order a key from us, you will get a good customer experience.

particlewave - I don't remember your exact key, but please feel free to contact me if you did not get it to work and we can resolve the issue for you.

Kind regards and Happy Christmas,

Ben

Thanks Ben.
Like I said, I'm not trying to badmouth you or your company. You provide a great service and I read great things, my luck has just been different. It's been several months since I placed my order, but the keys did not work both times. I really appreciate you stopping in personally to try to make things right.

I'll be in touch and I'll edit/update this posting to reflect the outcome :)

:) I purchased a new key fob on ebay for $144 for my 2003 Boxster and needed a new blank
cut. I took a photo with my I-phone and emailed it to keysinthepost.
Cost me about $35... took about 10 days to receive it and it works fine.
Local tech charged me $104 to program the fob.

Or maybe...he just knows a guy who has a friend that has the key to a Porsche. He's surely not trying to falsely advertise by using his first post to drag up an almost three year old thread is he?

particlewave 04-11-2016 08:48 AM

I never could get a key from them to work. They tried 3 times. :(

Swhitcomb 04-12-2016 05:07 PM

Same key as a VW.

Try Mark. watercooledkeys.com He's great. Had him cut several VW keys for me, and rekey a lock or two. Also a great source for VW parts of you need any.
