I just took her for a spin and man does it make a difference. The gears just slide in with very little effort. This must be what it was like when it was new.

I think the problem with the plug not going in was the car was in gear. I was going to start it and let the differential case warm up to see if it would go in easier so I took it out of gear. I had the plug in with about 1/4 spin (as far as I could get it in without stripping it) and when I popped it out of gear before starting it, the plug flew out. I went to get the plug and put it in a little so I could start it and not have oil fly everywhere and it kept going in with no problem.
