steering wheel wiring

I recently purchased a factory 3 spoke tip wheel to replace my 4 spoke POS. went well the only problem I encountered was the Male plug from the column into the steering wheel.there are 3 brown wires, 2 went into the plug a third wire brown and red was not connected but the plug looks like it can accept a 3 wire. any way to tell what that third wire is for? any advice on how to reconnect it to the plug? My tip thumb switches don't work I am thinking this is why.
