Of course, it was the work of Ferdinand Porsche. To think, he made the world's first mid-engined Formula 1 car twenty plus years before Cooper, who are often credited with revolutionizing the breed with their mid-engined design in the late 50's. Still, can you imagine driving a car with that amount of horsepower, skinny bias-ply tires, a huge rear-weight bias and swing-axles?????!!!!!!!!! If that didn't separate the men from the boys (or ladies from the girls), nothing could!

I believe that Porsche also pioneered supercharging in the earlier Mercedes SSK, as well four-wheel drive in a vehicle he designed during World War I, the Panzer tank in WWII, the first modern synchronizers for manual transmission, etc., etc. He was truly a genius.
