What Tires are you running on your Boxster

Hey guys I'm trying to decided what tires to get for my new 2000 S and wanted a little input from everyone on what they have tried and there likes and dislikes of the tires. I live in Alabama and take frequent trips to Florida so not really wanting a harsh or noisy tire but would like to keep performance in mind also the car will never see any snow but will see a lot of rain. Thanks and look forward to seeing what y'all prefer

Michelin Pilot Sport. Amazing grip. Fronts are 9yrs old.

DawgFan 06-11-2013 01:19 PM

My 2011 Spyder came with Bridgestone Potenza RE50A's. I would have preferred Michelin Super Sport's which I had on my 2008 Cayman S. Jury is still out on the Bridgestone's until I have more driving time on them. Bought my Spyder this Memorial Day and it only had 1,400 miles on the odometer. Currently at 2,100 miles.

Flavor 987S 06-11-2013 01:26 PM

I've use nothing but PS2's the past 7 driving seasons and +50,000 miles. On the final days of my 3rd set of tires. Excellent tires. My next set will be Super Sports. Or maybe I'd consider Yoko AD08's.

DaveGee 06-11-2013 01:30 PM

Just replaced the Bridgstone RE050's on my 2008 BS with Bridgestone Pole Position S-04's. Very happy and a great deal on Tire Rack right now.

BTW, Troutman - 9-year old rubber can be dangerous to your health. The experts say that the rubber compounds are compromised after 5 or 6 years, regardless of mileage.

YMMV

I'm on Bridgestone S02a rubber. Work great in the wet, and stick like proverbial s#^% to a blanket in dry conditions.

Nimbus117 06-11-2013 02:17 PM

Another vote for Michelin PS2's, they are amazing on my Boxster.

thstone 06-11-2013 02:23 PM

Street - Hankook R-S3. Much higher dry grip than my PS2's (tradeoff for high dry grip is weak wet grip and can get loud as they wear).
Track - Nitto NT-01 or Toyo R888

Johnny Danger 06-11-2013 02:47 PM

Goodyear Eagle F1's. No longer available though.

Brockmeister 06-11-2013 03:12 PM

I have Yokohama Envigor. They were 200 cheaper than the Michelins. I've had them on since October and seem to be holding up well.

thom4782 06-11-2013 03:17 PM

Bridgestone 760s. Went for a longer wearing, quiet, comfortable ride tire.

jesseborgelt 06-11-2013 03:36 PM

I was drawn to the Hankooks. I didn't have buyers remorse and they do everything I want them to...

golonaus 06-11-2013 03:58 PM

Bald in the back is the only correct answer
:-)

AKnowles 06-11-2013 04:09 PM

I have Sumitomos in the fronts and Hankooks in the rear. I had all Sumitomo when I bought the car and like them quite a bit. If I can, I'll probably put the Sumitomos back on it when I put fresh rubber on it. I felt the rear end stuck better with the Sumitomos, but that decision is based on just a couple of weeks of driving on them than the months on the Hankooks. Either is a good value for the money and works well enough for the street.

schnellman 06-11-2013 04:11 PM

+1 Sumitomos

I'm on my third set of Sumitomo HTRZ III's. Won't have anything else.

Ckrikos 06-11-2013 05:18 PM

Pilot super sports. They have unbelievable grip, better than my ps2's.

I have Pirelli P7000 Super sport and have done 10k miles on them in the last 2 years.
I think they are fairly old and still have wear left on them. I wish they would wear out. Looking forward to getting Michelin All seasons hopefully by the fall. These would supplement my Bridgestone Blizzaks on 16 inch rims also old. Hopefully the Michelin AS would do overall well in snow(not as good as Blizzaks I would think) and could go year round perhaps?. Any comment on road noise from Michelin AS tires versus regular summer tires?

I have the same on my car & I've been very satisfied so far.

tnoice 06-11-2013 06:10 PM

Bridgestone RE11's. Absolutely Amazing!!

Deserion 06-11-2013 06:31 PM

I'm running Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 right now. Performance is pretty good, especially for the price. Primarily using the car for commuting with a little fun thrown in occasionally.

Joe B 06-11-2013 06:46 PM

Pilot Super Sport

Another vote for Michelin Pilot Super Sports for where you live. Fantastic tires, excellent in the rain too, although probably not the best for spring/fall in Jackson Hole, WY. where I live. I think I'll probably put on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s this fall.

Want to buy some 235/40-18 and 275/35-18 Pilot Super Sports with 2000 miles on them?

1olddude 06-11-2013 07:34 PM

Black ones! :) Just kidding, Pilot Super Sports for my S. I haven't tried anything else so I have no opinion. The Michelins seem like great tires and I have 5000 miles on a new set.

LAP1DOUG 06-11-2013 07:43 PM

Like I keep telling my wife: It's like shoes - you have to have the proper ones for each occasion. For me it is:

Hoosier A6 for auto-x
Nitto NT-01 for dry track days
Conti DSW's for wet track days
Dunlop Star- Spec for street driving

Yes, I have a lot of wheels...

jb92563 06-11-2013 09:39 PM

Hankook V12 are nice and grippy for autocross and give plenty of audio feedback before letting go. They are amazing in the rain as well, better than the Michlin PS2 that the car came with, but may not last as long, but they are half the price so it works out well. I like having fresh rubber.

Marburk 06-11-2013 10:46 PM

Another +1 for the Sumitomo HTRZ IIIs. I had the Michelin Pilot Sports originally but I prefer the Sumitomos. Excellent price and performance.

MFozz 06-11-2013 10:52 PM

I just got a set.of the Goodyear eagle f1 assymetric 2s. Hoping to get them installed later this week. I wanted to get the continental dw, but they were backordered with no expected delivery date.

Topdown986 06-12-2013 01:18 AM

Thanks a lot guys looks like I have a few more to research lol.

I have the Michelin's and when they wear out will replace with the Simitomo III's. Had them on a previous car and loved them. Curious to see how they run on the S

heliguy 06-12-2013 04:41 AM

DaveGee, you didn't happen to grow up in Md did you?

kk2002s 06-12-2013 05:05 AM

Sumitomo HTR Z III. On the car when I bought it and I have put 7k on them since then. Tread still in excellent shape. No track, AutoX or extreme driving but daily driving including mild Winter (Never felt any driving on Marbles in sub 32's). Rain traction is excellent. I hope to get all season tires for this Winter, and use these through next Spring/Summer/Fall

Folks are just telling you what tires they are running. A lot of the suggestions on this thread are summer super high performance tires that trade road noise, harshness and wet traction for maximum dry grip.

Sounds like you want a summer performance tire, that is well behaved on the highway, doesn't wear too fast, and can handle the wet. Still a high performance tire. Research the Continental DW. (NOT the DWS which is a winter tire). I run them and would buy again.

I agree completely. There are no perfect tires that do everything well. Consider driving style carefully and choose a tire best suited for that use. For the OP, that might be PS2s, Super Sports, Hankook V12, Continental DW, Sumi HRTZ III.

Characteristics in common:

Good summer dry traction
Good wet traction
Quiet and comfy on the road
Reasonable tire wear
No good in snow or ice

BruceH 06-12-2013 07:09 AM

Michelin Pilot Super Sports for a whole week now! Love then so far, smooth, quiet with lots of grip! I had Bridgestones before which I liked but the Michelin's made a noticeable difference in ride.

Johnny Danger 06-12-2013 07:51 AM

Anyone have experience with the Nitto Invo or NT05 ?

Spent time with both. NT-05 was not my favorite tire. Loud and melted off the back rims in 6 mos. I have a friend with a Z06 and he always runs Invos. They feel pretty good and he says they are good in the rain.

rp17 06-12-2013 03:37 PM

Yokohama Advan s4. No complaints

barkinfool 06-12-2013 05:04 PM

pilot super sports on '02 S after prior owner had dunlops which I didn't like very much & were pretty new on the back when bought (fronts were originals & old). Car is garage queen so I don't run in bad weather, but I think I'm getting ~ 50% more wear on the back than the dunlops & less sloughing / tire loss. Will get one of the michelin options when I replace the rears in the fall given performance of these beauties. Worth it imo.

+1

Closest in feel to an R-compound tire I've had so far. Excellent value for the price. Pretty common tire for cars that are driven to DE/AX.
Coupled with a 20lb or less wheel and the grip level is hard to beat for a street tire that is actually decent in the rain. There is now a an RE-11S so the RE-11 is out.

murphy986 06-12-2013 07:32 PM

Hankook V12's - getting better as the weather gets hotter! Approximately 1200 miles on them at this point. Experience includes moderately aggressive street driving, 2 AX's, 1 PDX...happy with purchase(so far). Comparing to Michelin Pilot Sport-no sessions.

paintboy 06-13-2013 05:12 AM

Michelin All Season Pilot run flats. I have the run flats because I am diabetic and don't want to get stranded out in the country.
