washing only when visibly dirty, true but Rinsing from what I read from Hartz is ideal, it also lets you see when the protectant is dimishing. Blot dry when rinsing is done.
Letting dust accumulate in between long periods of washing is not a good idea. I would agree that you should wash only when necessary.
