2003 boxster s oil leak after winter storage
 

Hi the experts,
After six(6) months winter storage I've found oil drip on the floor. This is the first time after two years and drove only 6000km!
Should I bring the baby to the dealer or just do an oil change and continue driving?

looks like the rear main seal .

If this is a RMS problem could I wait till next clutch change? Is it critical or I can still drive it for this summer just making sure the oil level is good and check the floor from time to time?

IF it is the Rear Main Seal, that's what I'd do.

Quite often it's the IMS leaking, not the RMS. I wouldn't take the chance on an oil leak like this, get the IMS bearing replaced pronto or at least get a second opinion by an expert (especially if it's not quite 10 years old yet).

All Boxsters leak. It's just what they do.

(I'm no expert, but that looks like the RMS spot to me)

Not mine. And mine sat in winter hibernation for 7 months this year. Just got it out 2 weeks ago. Been doing this since 2006.

Nor mine and it too is winter stored. If it leaks, you should fix the leak.

My car has never leaked except at a cam cover after an indy had to remove both in order to fix the valves they bent. I took it to them with 75000mi on it (10 yrs. old) to get the LN ceramic bearing installed . They said it had never been apart before and was bone dry. I removed trans last month in order to repair the clutch problem (1.5 yr after they installed and 8000 mi.-problem started at 3000 mi.--loose pressure plate bolts (2) and subsequent damage to release bearing and the crank sensor bolt was about to fall out - oops forgot to tighten that too!@ $100/ hr).

I'd like to emphasize 2 points here:

(1) INDY"S ARE DANGEROUS
(2) I FEEL AT PEACE WITH LN'S SUPER CERAMIC BEARING NOW IN MY ENGINE

My Boxster doesn't leak either, and it spent four months in a storage locker this winter.

My Boxster had the exact same appearance for the oil leak. After tear down, I believe the leak was coming from the IMS flange. It was the old single o-ring type seal. The IMSB was totally fine (even though I still replaced it). I replaced the RMS, but it too looked fine.

Thanks for all the advices, I own it since 2009 and only put 9000km on it since. It was never leak a drop since my ownership. Next week I'll take it for a good inspection or repair. Will post the result.
BTW, the engine was replaced by the dealer in Aug-2006 at 32,000km...so the "new"engine has only 20,000km and I hope it has the new version of IMS bearing.

The odds are, with your replacement engine, you probably got the 987, which means no easy replacement of the IMS. The bearing is larger than the hole in the case, so the case has to be split to do it. But from what I've read the chance of failure is not as bad as the 2000 - 2005 single-row bearing.

NO, I don't think so. Porsche would NOT put a 987 engine into a 986. Mainly 2 reasons; too many dead Presidents, and the wiring/DME.
