Damn digital radio...

My wife gave me an awesome new IPOD for Christmas (the one with the TV screen). She thought it would sound awesome in the Box (when she gets out of the shop). I had to break it to her that it won't work without the FM transmitter because of the DAMN DIGITAL RADIO. When are they going to make an adapter...I'm dying here. Just had some New Years venting...I apologize. Happy New Year!

You'd think Becker would develop an aftermarket version with aux input. Wonder if they have agreement not to do so unless Porsche commissioned it?

I must be the only guy in the world without an iPod, so the market has to be there.

I think the larger question is why Porsche sticks with Becker. I think there stuff blows. The Bose unit in my C5 is vastly superior to any Becker unit I have ever heard.

It's not the digital radio that's the problem, it's the fiber optic MOST bus. No one's made anything that'll hook into that yet which is annoying as hell.

Dension USA is working on a MOST bus interface for iPod. Yeah, right--it was supposed to be released in Q1 of 2005.

Waiting...

Brother, I too am sans iPod -and that is totally by choice! I had an iPod Nano for a couple weeks before I got rid of it. You're not missing much, unless you'd like to have uninspiring battery life, a fingerprint magnet, & digital-rights molesting audio device. Ya gotta hand it to Apple, they sure know how to market those things. To me, they are the Rubix Cube of the new millenium.

I read the other day (I think it was in the last PCA Panorama) that the 2006’s will have iPod hookups. Anybody else heard anything like this?

The regular, full price IPOD is simply a great invention (IHMO).

Apple is not kicking ass with this product for nothing.

I love my iPod 40 gig version. I'm not a big fan of the Nano or the Micro however. I don’t think either can hold enough music. I wanted a player that could hold all my stuff and 4 gigs is not close to being enough. I have a friend with a Nano and as soon as I picked it up I thought "man, I'd break this thing in less than a week."

I travel a lot, and carrying my whole CD library in my pocket when I travel is great. The interface, though, is really what makes the iPod shine. For a while, I dissed the iPod too, but a few people who’s who opinions on gadgets I generally agree with kept telling me I’d love it. So last year I got a ton of Best Buy gift cards for Christmas and decided to get one. It is my second favorite thing that I own, right behind the Box.

Supposedly the new Tivos will interface with the iPod video. Now that is just awesome.

I reiterate, it's Apple's marketing that is kickin' all the ACE. They even got you to believe that it's a great invention. But the iPod is extremely limited!

a) digital rights have got it all bugaboo
b) unable to transfer music from the iPod to another device
c) iTunes is the only way to add/remove music
d) that circular dial used for scrolling is not a natural motion (it's cool, but not as natural as one might think it is)
e) not Honda reliable (disagree? post here after 1.5 years)
f) 99 cents is too much for a song (see allofmp3.com)
g) a newer "better" version is released entirely too frequently (imagine if the Boxster changed its body style every 2 years)

Those are some of my major complaints.

There are plenty of products that are far better then an iPod, but who can name one? Not a lot of people can. Know why? Because of those dancing silhouettes on TV to trendy music and clean interfaces (see Apple.com). And if those things don't sway you, they'll get your friends! Then BAM! Here comes uncle peer pressure explaining why life is 28% better now that he's got an iPod! I say it's a mediocre invention (not Apple's) that's easy to use. But with that ease of use you make a trade-off for features & expandibility. Isn't it amazing that people so easily fork over 200-400 dollars for what is essentially a walkman? For that kind of money, I'd like a few more features and freedom.

"Jeph, you're points seem valid and true. I assume you're quite hansome. But you haven't yet offered a solution."

Thank you. They are. I am. You may now go to the following link for impressive players...
http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/

I have this debate with all my iPod friends quite frequently (the Mac freaks are the most Nazi-esque about backing Apple -and they love their one-buttoned mouse). Rebuttle if you'd like. It's hard to change those who have been turned to the dark side. My plea is to those who have not yet fallen for the marketing, or mere "coolness factor." Free your mind! WWJD*?

No debate needed.

IPOD crushes every other player.

WHAT are the names of the competitors?

FYI:

You can copy songs from the iPod, you just need to know how to do it since they don’t explicitly tell you how. It is possible to have your iPod update the music library on your PC the same way the PC updates the iPod . Also, you can basically turn off all the digital protection in iTunes so long as you are ripping your own CDs since iTunes will use MP3 if you change the defaults, and since I almost never buy music online, this is not an issue. And if you are really hard up, you can burn a CD of what you downloaded (always a good idea anyway) then rip it back in MP3. I personally think digital copy right stuff is a total waste of time and the music industry so just give up on it.

I've also grown to like iTunes. For a while I used Media Player to do everything, then something else, but iTunes seems to work the best of all the ones I've tried.

I totally agree 99 cents is way too much per song.

Its funny, Jeph, because you sound exactly like I did about a year ago before I bought mine.

There's a ton of programs out there that allow you to put songs onto and yank them off off your iPod. For PCs at least, not sure about Macs.

I use a Nano but I'm a very casual user--I don't load all my albums onto it, I don't shop ITMS, etc. In fact, my 4GB nano is only 75% full. Fits my needs just fine.

Back on topic though--the stereo in my 987 is a pile of crap. The people responsible for putting this worthless husk of metal on the market AND TIEING ME TO IT WITH NO EASY OPTION FOR AFTERMARKET RELIEF should be flayed and left hanging like so much beef jerky.

I think IPOD is preferred because of the coolness factor (should win good design award). I mean you can have it in smooth shining black or white, touchlike panel, thin, engraved, and have that 'high quality' porcelain look (although I'm sure 90% of the parts are made somewhere deep in China, Mexico etc etc where manufacturing method is questionable). Other brands do work but I found most of them are plain ugly (big knobs, strange button location etc etc).

As far as IPOD functionality, it is definitely not reliable and whoever program the software should be shot. I have the 60GB one and it has been rebooted 10 times (once on the first day of ownership!).

The company almost went bankrupt (in 1995?) but lives the day thanks to its innovative design (transparent) and OS X. I think the lesson that Apple learnt is that appearance is number 1 when it comes to gadgets. Other stuff can wait.

My I add that it's 150 yen (about $1.20) in Japan for a song. Apple is sure making a lot of money from Itunes!

So the FM transmitter won't work with the digital stereo in the boxster. So I guess getting satellite radio won't work either?
