				Question?

After reading the "Red Line" thread in this forum earlier today I decided to give my car a push especially in 2nd gear and then late this evening the car starts to make this weird sound in 2nd gear only almost like the sound of a Tractor accelerating or the sound of water dripping in a empty plastic bucket really fast.
Any ideas of what's going on here?

Only in second? Only at one RPM range? Does the noise change with speed or if clutch is in? Sounds trans and not engine at least.

This is why I never pushed it. I know they are made to run hard, and if maintained will do so, but they are used, with a few owners and no account of how hard or easy they were driven and if basic repairs were made. Mine needed tires, brakes, clutch, trans leak, bearings, and so on....so how or why should I trust every oil change was prompt? It runs very, very smooth, and does very well up to 6k but I'm not wanting or planning on pushing past that. Just no need. Hope this is something small.

Yep only in second gear and yes the noise becomes louder and louder with speed.

Do you think it's an exhaust problem or gear box?

And what are the estimated repair costs for such a thing??

This is the first time I have really pushed it over 4.000 RPM quite disappointing really.

Then sounds like something was weak and waiting to fail. You should be able to get over 6k with no worries. My question was redline. This is the first performance car I've owned.

Noise does not get faster, just louder? Does it stop if clutch is pressed in while still in second? Odd that 2nd gear only.

It gets faster as well as louder and yes the noise does stop when I press the clutch.

My unprofessional opinion is that a bearing in the transmission failed.

I was thinking clutch since it stops with the clutch in, but the only in second thing suggests trans.

I was thinking when the clutch is depressed that the transmission is disengaged. Thus the bearing would be silent.

I am not the one to determine this though so let's see if Jeff in PA or Jake chime in.

I took her down to my local mechanic today he says the 2nd gear has lost a Tooth hence the grinding sound he hasn't got the tools to fix it so I will have to take it to a Porsche specialist now I'm dreading the repair costs.

well that blows.. but here's the thing.. can you get an exchange gearbox in Oz ?

also, while the gearbox is off and out, you may want to consider changing out the IMS and doing the RMS as well, seeing you are in there. it's completely your call, but you're 90% of the way there with the gear box out and having those done will make the car more desirable and likely put some added value into it.

I can find a 2nd hand gear box here in Sydney a lot cheaper than the price of a new Drive Shaft which sells for over $1500.

plus the cost of breaking down the gearbox to fit the gear as well. A replacement gearbox would probably be the way to go

			Yes it is.
While I've got you here do you know why a 2nd gear tooth would break?

why would a tooth break ? maybe a previous owner or driver not too capabable with gear changes or fancies themselves as a bit of a 'fangio' and tried changing gears without using the clutch ?

my father had a tooth break off once on a car, he'd left it parked in gear when it was rear ended.

i take it you'll put a new clutch in it when the box is out of the box

I'll see how I go in the $$$ department.
The clutch might have to wait until later.

your 5-speed transmission is exactly the same as an audi 5-speed (??? 01A i think ???); with some research you can get the cross-reference part numbers. save yourself thousands in porsche tax.

			Will a 915 gearbox fit on a 986 Boxster?

And yes Stephen I have a feeling it did.

Audi a4 or VW Passat 5 speed share transmission with the Boxster. Did the previous owner have transmission work done? Something was on it's way out if it failed at higher rpms.

Is that true Kenny?

What so it just fits right in there?

Will it work with the clutch??

And I'm not sure if he had done previous work on it.
