Can someone tell me if 996 wheels will fit 986. Actually can someone explain the differences and also what wheel offset, spacers, etc are? Feel free to tell me to RTFM if you point me somewhere to read... I have very little experience on wheel sizes etc but have been eying some replacements...

Ah I've done some reading and understand rim width , wheel size and generally offset. Yay.

Good for you. Now you don't have to put a buck in the "will 996 / Turbo wheels fit on my 986?" jar. It's getting quite full.

Typically, 996 wheels are not only wider, but the offset is much higher than those of the 986. The simplest way to explain offset - is the distance in millimeters between the centerline of the wheel and the back pad that interfaces with the hub. The higher the offset, the more the wheel will be positioned inward toward the strut. The lower the offset, the more the wheel will extend outward toward the fender. With the exception of an 11 inch wheel, most 996 wheels can be augmented to fit a 986 with the proper use of spacers.
