Out of Winter Storage

Hi All,

It's been another looong, cold, winter in Maine...

Haven't posted since last fall... Bought my 2000 Boxster S, Arctic Silver, Black top, Arctic Silver Hardtop, 54,000 miles, in late fall last year, and only ran a tank of fuel thru it before putting it away for the winter.. Been reading te forum all winter and wishing it would be Spring soon..

So I go out in the garage, uncover the car, 51 degrees out, get in , turn the key and nada... Battery dead. Got out the charger and hooked er up... Noted that the battery was dated April 2007.. Decided to disconnect charger, remove battery and go get a new battery... Viola.. perfect.. Went for a nice ride.. Smiled all the way! Came home, washed it off, gave it a quick wax and put it away...

Weather turned cold and didn't drive it for a few weeks..

Fast foreward 3 weeks: My grandsons came to visit and wanted to go for a ride with the top down... I had had the top down a few times with no issue.. But this time when I dropped the top, I heard a crack... It was painful, but, I didn't raise the top and look. Just smiled and took the boys, one at a time, for a nice ride. They loved it.. My oldest grandson, 11 years old, asked that I keep it for him so that he could one day drive it... I smiled...

Their Dad comes to pck them up and after a few mnutes I went out and raised the top, sure enough, the plastic window had cracked vertically, dead center, about 11". I was not happy and figured it may have been because I had left it folded up over the winter as the hardtop was on... Either way , it was broken..

I did some searching herre and found that this was a common problem and I had known nothing about "the chop".. I called my insurance company, they sent an adjuster out a few days later and they are going to cover it... I am now trying to decide between , the GAAH, Robbins and one other... (Yes, I have read the threads and understand the pros and cons) , I WILL be going with the glass window, may not go with defroster as my Pcar never gets driven in winter/cold weather. I will not be installing myself, unless I find a local vlunteer to assist.

Last, I have noticed that at 1600-2000 rpms, in gear, moving in any gear, that I hear a howl, moan. It goes away after that rpm range. I have no idea where this may be coming from. It does not appear to be load dependant, but is rpm dependant..

Any ideas?

Pup

BTW, Thank-you for this wonderful forum .

Bummer about the top. I just ordered this from Auto Tops Direct off the eBay site(free shipping).
Porsche Boxster Convertible Top in Metropol Blue German A5 Cloth with Glass | eBay
Supposedly it is the same as the GAHH top. Figures, I paid $559 last week but looks like it is $539 right now. It arrives tomorrow and I am having it installed for $550. Reading about installs, it is 8 to 10 hours of frustration, so paying someone is worth it to me. I can't imagine buying in the fall and then having to wait for spring to drive it! I am sure you have some great roads to drive!

ATD on eBay? That is the Robbins top correct? I'll check in to that. Local shop is going to charge me 9 hrs at $70/hr for install, 630.00.

Yes, it was VERY hard to put it up for the winter...

Thanks

No, it is more like the GAHH top from my understanding. Seems Robbins and ATD are all owned by GAHH. Take a look at this thread:

ATD Vs GAHH

Interesting: GAHH 925.00 ATD: $539.00

Both shipped from same place...

Seems like a no-brainer.

Very nice, ordered mine. It's on the way!

I think I will like being able to see out of the glass instead of a cloudy plastic cracked window
