How much have you done in your first year of ownership?

I bought my 2000 Boxster in December 2011, and since then have spent more than I think my wife knows. The latest addition was a set of 18" wheels that I had refinished and put on new rubber. I put on a NHP muffler and some exterior bits - smoked side markers, a silver/black emblem, and replaced the broken Boxster script.

I wrapped some of the interior pieces with carbon fiber wrap, but I'm thinking of having them hydro graphic'd for a more professional look.

With maintenance costs and the add-ons, I think I'm easily close to $3000.00 (I had to fix a dent from the previous owner).

I don't mind spending the money cause it makes me smile every time I hear that engine roar.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1358383032.jpg

Starting from the front of the car going toward the tail end:

Drivers side radiator: Small leak on at the mounting lug, symptoms occasional fluid by tire on hot days. Seems the bumper was tapped and cracked the mount.
Grill guards on radiator intake Protection from debris build up in radiators.
Canister Purge valve: Code from Durametric
Horn Old horn was to quite, replaced with Stebulis air horn
Front suspension and rear complete suspension and sway bar bushings Struts were completely shot with no dampening, bushing were worn and cracked.
Wheel bearings Replaced all four wheel bearings with a tool that allowed the job to be completed in only 5 hours for all four wheels!
Rotors and pads Worn to maximum extent possible.
Water pump and low temp thermostat: No symptoms, just an upgrade. Old components were working
Fan Belt:Replaced older belt
AOSSaw increased oil build up in the throttle body and small puffs of smoke in the morning.
Spark plugs/tube/coils Plugs were clean but replaced with new, tubes showed signs of moderate to severe leaks, coils replaced as preventative measure.
Rear Main Seal (RMS) Seal had failed and was leaking
IMS No visible leakage, but bearing was in stage 1 failure in that there was no grease and bearing was filled with engine oil.
All three cam chain tensioners Under harmonic analysis there was a large signal to noise ratio, when removed all three showed signs of internal spring failure when compared to new tensioners.
Clutch, pressure plate, throughout bearing, dual mass flywheel While there were no symptoms, they were all roasted and were close to failure.
Super clutch kit from Pelican This is offered from Pelican and replaced all the other parts associated with the clutch components
Clutch Master and Slave cylinders Replaced as part of a preventative measure
Clutch fluid line and connector This is required with upgrading the slave cylinder (will add about $320 to add these two parts)
CV joints and all boots and axle nuts Preventative replacement.
Transmission and Engine mounts All were shot but showed no signs of failure (I may not have recognized the signs???)
Oil filter housing Upgrading a 14 year old component
Radiator Reservoir While there was no leakage the tank was severely aged and showed spiderwebs cracks.
New JDM seats with lowered mounting bracket Considered to be an upgrade from OEM seats providing better seating position.
JDM performance steering wheel Personal choice allowing better driving position
Gahh new top (soft window) Replacing older top which is beginning to show cracking in window.
Conversion of top Converted top to manual while retaining power clam shell operation (personal choice).
Sirius radio Upgraded for personal choice
LCD control panel for heater/AC Replaced due to failure of switches and LCD (nice replacement for $57 verses the $750 OEM replacement cost!
Various pieces and parts as well as tools to aide in the work process
Alignment Once my wheels are back from powder coating she will get her patas set straight so she runs true.

I did a pretty good accounting for costs from last year here: http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-racing-forum/41688-yearly-track-costs-how-spend-%2420k-yr-%2410k-porsche.html

Since I published that list, I've replaced the spark plugs, all 6 coil packs, and I am having the the top replaced today (Robbins glass window).

Previous to that list I've replaced the AOS, starter, rear wheel bearings, rebuilt/repacked CV joints, transaxle spider gear, clutch, throw-out bearing, flywheel, major service, spark plug tubes.

I have a water pump, 160F thermostat, and the Boxster S oil cooler sitting here ready for installation this weekend.

Looks like us 986 owners are doing more than our fair share to re-vitalize the economy! :D

Not much up until today!
2000 base

Day 2 - replace ignition switch at dealership. They only had the full ignition switch / steering lock in stock. Best $570 I ever spent ;-) as it let me actually drive the car I just purchased!

CV boots on one axle - $250

Oil change - $150

New tires (today!) - $1150

Alignment (tomorrow) - $125

Miscellaneous (wiper blades, hood/trunk shocks etc...) ~$200

So I appear to be at ~$2500 in six months..... Hmm that hurts to add it up.

I expect the brakes to be good for another year, maybe longer now!

I would never have put this kind of money in any other car, so whats the point of doing this math? This is much cheaper than therapy and a whole lot more fun! I suggest deleting this pointless thread.

BruceH 01-17-2013 10:56 AM

I have only had mine since July so the year is not over!

CV Boots
Spark plug tubes
Front Brake Pads and Rotors
CDR 220 iPod connector
Gas cap
Hella Clear side markers
Floor Mats
Oil change
Brake Flush
TS Cat Bypass
TS Exhaust
Light Switch module

To do:
-Short Shift
-New top, not sure which one to go with yet(GAHH or Robbins but it will be glass) or color(Blue or Black)
-clutch, IMS, RMS
-repaint calipers
-replace rear emblem
-engine mount

That's it for now. My biggest problem is time! I have a house that needs some more work as well plus I need time to just go drive!

I bought my 2001 Boxter S in May 2012, with 55k Miles on it.

I have been autocrossing 2x this year so far so did maintenance to accomodate the racing. I did all the work myself, except tires

Here is what I spent on it:

New Hankook Tires al around: $650

Pressure brake bleeder: $55
New Front Brake pads: $220
Flush Brake fluid: $20

Reconnect separated Winshield washer spray hose and add clamp: $1

New touch screen does everything double DIN Stereo: $230

Turtle Black Box wax kit: $25

Racing Jack: 175

Oil and filter: $80

About $425 of that is regular type maintenance and the rest is upgrades and support equipment.

It would cost less if your not autocrossing as it eats up tires and brakes faster.

Van914

Hey Van!!- recognized your name from the WORLD site- did you get rid of your 914, or just add a 986?

mine is a 2000S with 68,k miles bought from second owner- now has 74k miles, just returned from a trip to NYC from SC with my son to visit a couple grad schools :) longest trip with a 986 so far oh, and bought a hard top while passing thru D.C. on my way

Got my 986 10 months ago and within the first few weeks replaced the O/A sep, did the ignition upgrade, oil change, replaced the O2 sensor on right, and other than that just enjoing the car- P.O. had already done tires, brakes, CV boots and other O2's within 2k miles of my purchase-

now, on my short list however is new headers and cats- when i replaced the upstream O2 on right side the threads were stripped and rusted out bad, i had to re-thread it. it holds but i will have to replace these soon, so i am looking hard at the Maxspeed set up. (SS, 200cell sport cats etc)

Autobahn Pete 01-26-2013 03:51 PM

Purchased a 2003 Boxster base model back in April 2012 with a blown engine. Car had 52K miles, brand new clutch installed by Porsche dealership, new convertible top linkages, and new tires. Previous owner was done with the car and wasn't going to put another penny into it. Bought it for a decent price and I was willing to take on a project. The engine probably split a cylinder wall since the left exhaust manifold was full of coolant when I removed the exhaust to remove the engine. I haven't taken the time to disassemble and investigate yet. Just holding onto the engine for spare parts for now. Anyways, this is what I've done so far:

1) Installed a used engine with 30K, new water pump, LN IMS upgrade, IMS 160 thermostat, new rear crank seal, new spark plugs, new oil/air separator, KN drop in air filter, new expansion tank, and all new fluids.
2) Turn signal switch was broke, so I went ahead and installed new switch with cruise control and OBC controls. Recoded with Durametric and both functions now work.
3) Kids want to ride too! Installed SRS bar under passenger side seat and had dealership recode.
4) Radio was basic with dash speakers only. Installed Kenwood DNX9990HD double din unit (nav/bluetooth/etc.), JL amplifier, JL audio speakers in dash and doors now (I can actually hear the radio with top down now!). Bought a used BOSE subwoofer box and removed the Chinese BOSE speakers and installed JL 5.25's.
5) Sloppy shifter. Installed short shift kit-great improvement.
6) Poor night time illumination-Installed Chinese HID retrofit kits and jumped foglamp relay. No more problems seeing in the dark anymore, but annoying battery and oil pressure light comes on. Will be fixed in phase II though!

Phase II:

Just bought a 2002 996 C4S with a blown engine! Gonna remove front fenders, bumpers, Xenon headlamps, and update the look on my Boxster. With the install of the factory Litronics now, I can get rid of the dash warning lights! Also will be removing heated seats for the chilling morning Spring mornings with the top down. If you ask why I don't fix the 996, I want a convertible and I've sold the car for the same amount I paid for it and an agreement that I give him the old Boxster seats and body parts in exchange. The new owner just want to strip the 996 and track it anyways. So for the money, I won't have much invested into O.E. Litronics, updated front end, and heated seats!

Year 1, Month 3 (2000 Boxster S - 68K miles)

AKnowles 02-16-2013 01:22 PM

Oh my! I haven't had my boxster but two months (70K miles) and I'm in to it for:

DD Din installation kit - $165
Console Cupholder - $55
Red Clip - $6
Logo - $51
PST2 - $320
Mats & Rear Speaker parts - $330
Kenwood DNX9980 HD & iPod Adapter - $850
Infinity Speakers - $350
Kicker Subwoofer - $125
Helix Blue Five amplifier & wiring - 650
Rear Camaera - $125
Ashtray Delete - $29
Center Radiator parts - $375
Bird Console - $335
Litronic Headlights - $740
Miscellaneous Pelican Parts - $350
Rear Tires - $350
Alignment - $100

Total ~ 3200

And I still have:

Remaining parts for center radiator & flush - $450
Water Pump -
Low Temp Thermastat -
Belt -
Oil Change - $125
Filters -

By the time summer hits I'll have put $4,000 in to it if not more, but I have to admit it is a blast and well worth it. So far anyway. :)

Bought my 2000 S in October. The project list so far:
  • Engine air filter
  • Cabin air filter
  • Oil and oil filter
  • Serpentine belt
  • Ashtray delete
  • Frunk struts
  • Trunk struts
  • IMS Guardian
  • Repaired driver's seat - cracked bolster
  • DEPO tail lights
  • Trickle charger/pigtail on battery
  • Relocated frunk emergency release to tow hook
  • Clear side markers

Picked up brake fluid and bleeder over the winter, and just bought coolant, water pump, and low temp thermostat - all to be done early this spring. Also will replace the headlights at some point this year.

Most of what I've done wasn't necessary, but part of the process of updating a low mileage (26K) 13 year old car.

April 2013 update:
  • Bled brakes
  • Installed garage door opener button in dash
  • Activated OBC (temp display) with Durametric
  • Painted bumperettes Arctic Silver

November 2013 update:

OK, now it's been a year. Have also done:
  • Replaced ignition switch - (it went bad)
  • Replaced water pump, thermostat, coolant
  • Aluminum pedal covers inc. throttle extension plate
  • Changed gearbox oil
  • Cleaned radiators
  • Replaced halogens with Litronics
  • New floor mats

Pete, can you elaborate on this -- what does "jumped foglamp relay" mean, and why your battery and oil pressure lights came on..?

And speaking of HID retrofits, anyone knows this kit:

My car was complete **************** when I got it. Learned my lesson to always get a PPI before purchasing any vehicle. To be fair, I bought it for 8k.

Total costs of maintenance and repairs to get it up to speed:
$4000

Total costs of upgrades/enjoyment:
~$2000
