Oil filter only change

It is possible to change only the oil filter WITHOUT changing the oil?

I realize that I need to top off once I change the filter.
I want to inspect the filter between the oil changes.
How much oil can/will come out just changing the filter?

Hey

i had to do it a bit back on a 2000MY and I loss maybe a quart or less, just make sure to have a good container underneath to catch the oil.

Yes. I did it a few weeks ago after a track day. You will lose around .5 quart of oil.

The oil filter is mounted higher than the oil sump so you won't have all 10 qts pouring out when you remove the filter/holder. You'll only lose what is in the oil filter itself and the line directly above. A bit messy but easy. Just be sure to top up the oil after installing the new filter.

I did that very thing this week. I check it at about 2,500 miles and change the oil at 5k. I have the LN oil filter adapter so it's a bit more of a pain, but this makes quick work of the filter;

Removing the filter is how us 987 guys alleviate an oil overfill. (We don't have a dipstick.)

As long as you're within +/- 0.5 quart you're still okay...? Hard to see how someone can overfill it... if it takes 9 quart put in say 8 3/4 qt since there'll be oil after draining the oil pan...?

The 986 dip stick is not exactly easy to read compare to say one from Toyota. I use the electric gauge and don't check the dip stick after an oil change.

I found flexible/rubbery green bits in the filter.
From searching this forum, I am concluding that they are sealant.

Actually oil overfill is a lot more common than you might think and it's the fastest way to kill your AOS. Some of the reasons:

1. Not getting the car level when draining.
2. Not allowing enough time for a complete drain.
3. Not measuring refill carefully.

I always refill with 8.5qts at first and drive the car a bit. Re-check and top off when the car is level and the gauge countdown has timed out.

FWIW my 987 only takes 8 quarts with an oil & filter change. Putting in 8.5 or 9 quarts is how you get an over-full condition

Did the capacity change with the 987? I can't remember the exact figure in my manual, but for my 97 it says the capacity is 8.9xx or 8.7xx quarts, something like that. I just remember that it was a very high 8, not quite 9 quart capacity.

I swear though, I look at this car sometimes and wonder just where it puts all that oil compared to the Corolla with its seemingly meager 4 quarts.
