I have wondered for quite a long time, every single time I see them, just what these things are under our Boxsters:

I saw a pre-03 S driving down the highway today, and as I came up behind him I could see that the left one of these was just completely gone. I've noticed on my own base model in pictures that one of them appears to be a bit bent, but still intact. Even in the picture above they don't appear to be symmetrical.

So what are they? Do they serve a purpose?

It's crap hanging down.

... air scoops (spoilers) that dray air into the transmission are to cool it off.
Since they are so low to the ground they can easily get torn off by road debris.
They serve an important function.
If you appreciate your tranny, make sure you have two spoilers in place.

Thanks for the info, Pedro. I figured they had to serve some sort of purpose to be there like that, and that certainly is an important one given how hot everything back there always is. Are these metal? Plastic? Rubber? Are they replaceable pieces should they find a way to get torn off?

I don't have these on my 2004 base - do I need them and where can I get them? I suspect it may be a $100 piece of plastic if I fall off my turnip truck at the dealership.

Sweet, thanks folks! I do feel a little silly seeing that these have been talked about in the past on more than one occasion on the forum, but I tend to think my search for something like "under car hanging thing" won't be terribly successful. Maybe I'll reconsider from now on.

Good to know these parts aren't priced like unicorns, either. I'll have to take a closer look at these now that I know what they are and what they do, and order a few spares from Wayne just in case...I don't always get to dodge road debris/-kill.

This thread has prompted me to go out in the garage when I get home and crawl under my car and make sure these are still there. (I think they are) Did I mention it's 102 deg.? I think they're important now!

Overdrive, As the number 2 poster on this board and a member since 2004 I have not seen this discussed before. Don't feel bad.

Got a flashlight and crawled under the car last night. The drivers side scoop is gone. The pass. side one is still there but appears to be missing the thing in the middle that helps to hold it in place. I went ahead and took it off. The part # is the same as thstone says with the exception that it ends in '02'. When I click on the ******************************************** link is says the part is no longer available. Crap! Pelican maybe?

tonycarreon pointed out that they're $10 at Pelican. Go for it. I plan to do the same just so I have them handy in case either of them is lost.

Now everyone needs to cut an opening in their rear bumper cover to let that scooped air out.....grill up the license plate area

I actually ripped one of mine off for the first time at my last autocross! Spun doing about 65 in second gear, clipped 7 cones, 2 of which i sucked under my car. But still found my squirrels!! :D

Haha just need to put it back on now 0.o
