Always wondered what these are...?
I have wondered for quite a long time, every single time I see them, just what these things are under our Boxsters:
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1342474536.jpg :confused::confused: I saw a pre-03 S driving down the highway today, and as I came up behind him I could see that the left one of these was just completely gone. I've noticed on my own base model in pictures that one of them appears to be a bit bent, but still intact. Even in the picture above they don't appear to be symmetrical. So what are they? Do they serve a purpose? |
It's crap hanging down.
My co-worker Shane just said that's what it is so I posted it. |
Those are ...

Since they are so low to the ground they can easily get torn off by road debris. They serve an important function. If you appreciate your tranny, make sure you have two spoilers in place. Happy Boxstering, Pedro |

I don't have these on my 2004 base - do I need them and where can I get them? I suspect it may be a $100 piece of plastic if I fall off my turnip truck at the dealership.

Sweet, thanks folks! I do feel a little silly seeing that these have been talked about in the past on more than one occasion on the forum, but I tend to think my search for something like "under car hanging thing" won't be terribly successful. Maybe I'll reconsider from now on.
Good to know these parts aren't priced like unicorns, either. I'll have to take a closer look at these now that I know what they are and what they do, and order a few spares from Wayne just in case...I don't always get to dodge road debris/-kill. |
This thread has prompted me to go out in the garage when I get home and crawl under my car and make sure these are still there. (I think they are) Did I mention it's 102 deg.? I think they're important now!

Oh man, here we go. :p
Spinnaker, what can I tell ya? One of these days I'll make it happen. I'm still looking for that pause button to use on the rest of my life. |
Overdrive, As the number 2 poster on this board and a member since 2004 I have not seen this discussed before. Don't feel bad.
|
Got a flashlight and crawled under the car last night. The drivers side scoop is gone. The pass. side one is still there but appears to be missing the thing in the middle that helps to hold it in place. I went ahead and took it off. The part # is the same as thstone says with the exception that it ends in '02'. When I click on the ******************************************** link is says the part is no longer available. Crap! Pelican maybe?
|
tonycarreon pointed out that they're $10 at Pelican. Go for it. I plan to do the same just so I have them handy in case either of them is lost.
|
Now everyone needs to cut an opening in their rear bumper cover to let that scooped air out.....grill up the license plate area
With these warm summer temperatures my engine comparment is pretty close to being an oven I would consider venting out the top of the roof didnt fold down in there |
Them's the Road Kill scoops.....run it over, scoop it up and head home to fire it up!
|
Depending on how far you are from home it may already be cooked by the time you get home Beelzy.

I actually ripped one of mine off for the first time at my last autocross! Spun doing about 65 in second gear, clipped 7 cones, 2 of which i sucked under my car. But still found my squirrels!! :D
Haha just need to put it back on now 0.o |
Well at least we know they're inexpensive and replaceable. I have yet to eat any cones at autocross, but I expect that if I ever do these are likely to die in the process.

Yes, it was described as that on pelican's site also. I just ordered two of them and two sets of 'push buttons' - However the part # on my existing one is 986 331 361 02. The ending '02' is for '97 - '00 models and the '03' is for the newer 986s. They were almost too cheap to be true. Only $2.50 for the ones ending in 02. I got my glasses on and held my existing one in my hand and typed the pn right off of the part itself.... sooooooo???? we'll see. Maybe an error on their site??
|
Update: It was too good to be true. I just got off the phone w/pelican and the push button things are used with the newer designed part ending in .03 - The $2.50 ea. price was old and hadn't been updated. Also even if I did get the old style ones the push button things would not have been applicable. (I don't think?) - So I upgraded to the newer style ones and got off the extra $15!
I need to get a life. |
The 986 331 361 03 has superseded the "02" version used on the older 986's.
It will fit fine and there is only a slight difference in the appearance of them. It is what I put on my 2000 S and when it is under the car, nobody will be able to tell the difference. BTW, mine came with the plastic push button rivet included even though the independent shop ordered one separately. So I have an extra push button rivet in case I run over a cone someday. |
That's good to know as I also have a '00S. I guess I'll have two extra sets of button rivets as well.

Thanks |
They way I understand it they are in two part #s - You need one of each pn# for each side. They were only $1.50 ea.

Ok I received a 775-40 pn# yesterday. I've attached a pic that should explain it or make it more confusing. I ended up with two male and two female pieces. I really had to use a lot of force to snap them together. I almost gave up and was going to rely on how they were before with no push button snaps. I finally bent the rubber spoiler over and snapped them together with a pair of vice grips. You'll feel a solid snap when they do come together. The spoilers came from pelican and they had to get the push buttons from ATL.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1343592092.jpg

Sorry for the double pic post. Maybe a moderator can remove one???

Hard to tell from the pictures what is in each package. Was there one male and female in each package, or two of each in each package?
|
A package of two males and a package of two females.... I know, weird.
