I only wear underwear when I'm out on a long drive . If I have a breakdown, my thong can double as a fan belt .

This car is legendary and is certain to be bought by someone with a Porsche collection (hence the price). Its not a car that someone off the street would buy to drive to the country club - that's what 458 Italia's are for!

These are the cars that made Porsche legendary. They were wicked to drive and the most common statement was that the car was trying to kill the driver. It took huge heuvos and skill to master them.

i've often thought about building a poor man's yellowbird. it's 'just' a modified 964 (currently second cheapest of the 911's after the 996). you could do all the standard lightening mods (seats, RS carpet and door cards, sound insulation, lexan, etc.) safety mods (cage, harness, etc.) suspension (964 already has coil-overs) and brakes easily enough, and can buy knock-off ruf front bumpers, etc., everywhere (note the yellowbird didn't have flares to reduce aerodynamic drag and maximise top speed).

regarding the engine, i am of the understanding there were two versions; a ctr 1 and ctr 2. one had a completely built engine, but the other was built on a stock engine. this is cool, as the higher compression of a n/a engine gives you more lower rpm torque and smooths-out the lag from a big turbo(s). i think they tucked the intercoolers in the rear wheel wells like the 959. anyways, there's lots of threads on the pelican turbo forum on how to turbo a n/a aircooled engine on the cheap, so do-able.

ok, now get back to arguing about something that has no right/wrong answer.

The CTR (1) is based on the pre 964 chassis. You can visually tell by the long, floor mounted shift lever.

ok, and makes sense as the 911 chassis is fundamentally lighter than the 964 (no transmission tunnel for the awd). that also helps with my vague remembrance that the stock engine ruf turbo'd was a 3.2, but again i was being lazy and didn't refresh my memory (uhh ... wiki is still down, right ...?). personally, i find the 964 (and ruf) body style (bumpers) 'heavy' and would rather start with a pre-89 base car. in fact, one of my dream cars is a 3.2 carrera with the wide body option, sunroof delete and turbo charger with mild boost - what a car!!!

I am with you on the pre 89.....classic Porsche lines right in the middle of old and new. Almost had one long before the box...just missed it!

I'm not bored and I'm not snowed in (it was 68F here today) and I don't particularly like to argue.

But I do like to talk about Porsche's and this one was off the chart! I can't get enough of that video.

Wasn't able to find it but I thought there was one of the same car running the ring with video taken from a helicopter showing some mind boggling power slides. Same car with some footage taken outside of the cockpit:

Ive had a couple RX7's (a 85 and a 87 turbo II with a street port) the 85 was great till an apex seal blew around 120k miles and the turbo II was fast as hell when it decided to run lol for me the reliability of an RX is just not there or I would have a RX8 or FD sitting in my driveway right now....my next car will be a long hood 911 or 944S2

but I love that yellowbird

I've had 4 rotary engines and 2 rx7s. 1 carbon locked when the car was 1 month old, one popped a coolant line and overheated and died, the last one I replaced lasted 180,000 miles and I only replaced it to put in a 13b. i'll keep replacing the engines for as long as the rest of this car will last. They're cheap.

I spent a bunch of time this fall looking for a track car and drove quite a few 944s. I just love that car. The chassis and steering are sooo much more intimate than even the Boxster, no wonder that car is so well regarded. S2s are tough to find though.

every time I stop by my mechanics shop I'm certain to see two things. A 911 restoration under works and a 944 needing work.

I've thought about buying a track toy as well. It will probably be an older Miata. i beat the pants off that car and NOT ONCE did it whine or quit. The engine is bullet proof, suspension and exhaust mods are a pittance, tires are cheap since they're 15" and the car does not feel the slightest bit modern and disconnected. i don't really thing you can find all that wrapped up in one car that wouldn't require a trailer (street legal). Why did I ever sell that car...I spent twice as much overhauling the Boxster.

I ended up with an MR2 with a V6 swap. Manual everything (windows, locks, non-abs brakes, steering), 2600 pounds, mid engine, cheap (1.5% of the cost of the CTR ). Should be fun.

I see the historical importance but $250K in 2012 sports car dollars is like $500K in 2007 sports car dollars. You'll think a little harder about how much history you'll be willing to pay for.

There are other vintage cars I'd apply that kind of coin towards.

^ Anyone who has that kind of coin likely already has a garage full of other vintage cars. The Yellowbird isn't where someone starts their car collection, its where they complete it.
