2013 Boxster unveiled

The 2013 Porsche Boxster Is Longer, Wider, Lighter, Better

chaudanova 01-11-2012 03:53 PM

Wow, I like it! Thanks for posting!

vitaminC 01-11-2012 04:14 PM

Overall I think it looks very good. However, they are going crazy with the buttons!

landrovered 01-11-2012 04:28 PM

We are lucky to still have buttons, a lot of other manufacturers are getting rid of them. I would not want to be trying to navigate a touch screen while driving on a curvy road. I want to be able to reach down without looking.

blue2000s 01-11-2012 04:46 PM

I'm not a fan.

CVstarBoxster 01-11-2012 05:24 PM

I like it!

Overdrive 01-11-2012 05:25 PM

77 pounds to me is not significant enough of a weight drop to be noted, just my opinion. If it were longer, wider, and somehow lighter than what the early 986 was, now that would be a feat worth mentioning.

DenverSteve 01-11-2012 05:36 PM

Agreed. It looks great but 200 fewer pounds would be better.

Ghostrider 310 01-11-2012 05:44 PM

I don't like the back, it looks like a Panamera, I will be buying an older version now for certain.

WhipE350 01-11-2012 08:11 PM

I'm not sure either. I would have been happy with just the Cayman hockey stick on the side panels. The back is interesting, maybe not in a good way...something just doesn't feel right. I'll have to see more pics. I think these in red are helpful. 2013 Porsche Boxster S - Gallery

jbs986 01-11-2012 08:19 PM

I will have to see it in-person,Before I can say I like it.

ekam 01-11-2012 08:24 PM

Really can't tolerate the fact that there's an ugly seam right above the intake duct...

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/135...f68e8f8f60.jpg

And never mind the "I'm an old man" interior...

Saudin801 01-11-2012 08:53 PM

In one of the pics the front resembles a Toyota MR-2 spyder.

986_c6 01-11-2012 09:16 PM

Love the top view...the rear view is ok...do not like the front view at all:barf:

They are definitely going away with sensuous lines and more towards this "crease" business.

vijen6 01-11-2012 09:42 PM

Hmm .. the side is actually whats screaming MR2 to me .. the tail lights a bit Aston .. but yeah .. I might be biased but I think the 986 is still the best look boxster.

I'll still take a Spyder any day though .. =D

+1, The Spyder is by-far the best looking and best performing Boxster to date.:)

tolum 01-12-2012 03:24 AM

Back looks too Z4...

Ghostrider 310 01-12-2012 03:24 AM

I'm with Ekam, that seam is awful, especially with the other seam running toward the rear.

jakekit 01-12-2012 04:25 AM

It's turned out much better than I had expected to be honest. I LOVE the interior and they certainly have done a great job pushing the tech and performance forward. 77 lbs isn't much, but while most cars just get fatter, I'll take any slimming.

The taillight/spoiler treatment is the only thing I'm not sold on. I need to see it in person.

Wing going into tail lamps is like women and their over-drawing their lips with lipstick. This is an press photo from Porsche by the way. Notice also that they have lots of photos shot from high up, I think they're having trouble finding a good angle with this car.

2013 Porsche Boxster Preview

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2013-porsche-boxster-and-boxster-s-photos-and-info-news

Electric steering, electric parking brake, engine start-stop, fully electric soft-top, dynamic transmission mounts.

"Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear axle differential lock that varies the level of torque sent to each of the rear wheels."

vitaminC 01-12-2012 05:42 AM

And that yellow is bad, too!

I am sure that I will like it better in person, as now I even find the Panamera tolerable...

Overdrive 01-12-2012 07:08 AM

Agreed that it'll have to be seen in person, but the only thing that I can say in the positive when I see a Panamera is "nice leather"...otherwise, I still don't like them as a whole.

Overdrive 01-12-2012 07:09 AM

And I think the overhead shot from this photo gallery definitely proves to us that the clamshell is indeed gone.

Ghostrider 310 01-12-2012 07:15 AM

My salesman emailed me and told me the he thinks the pricing is going to come in around 51K base 59K S.

ProjectM96 01-12-2012 08:50 AM

I hate the wing going over the tail lights attachment in the back and I don't like the interior. The interior does not look like Porsche style and most of the buttons and controls are blocked or covered by the shift knob.

The side and front look amazing though.

Result: Not going to buy the 2013+ generation Cayman S because of how I know it will look. I am sticking with trying to save up for the 2012 Cayman R, my still dream car.

thstone 01-12-2012 08:51 AM

Its not a particulary eye catching design. I think that the model would have been better served by moving the design truer to the original Boxster concept design.

Overdrive 01-12-2012 10:11 AM

I'll agree to that, thstone, but I've got the feeling there's a lot more at work in the decision-making with more VW Group influence. The interior does come off as being pretty stale, thought it could be that gray color just isn't helping.

I'd really just have to sit in/drive one to see if it's something I could easily get over...not that I'm looking to hop into a new Boxster.

RandallNeighbour 01-12-2012 10:18 AM

What this shows me is that the 2014 and 2015 models are going to take this design to the level it deserved to be in 2013.

Boy howdy I'm glad I wasn't poised to pounce on this model. I would have been very disappointed that I had to wait until the designers came to their senses and realized that the break in the sheet metal behind the doors (above the air intakes) is AWFUL looking!

I do not mind the interior and other styling changes. I wonder what the new Cayman will look like. Anyone posted pix of that yet? I'm probably more interested in that design anyway... no more convertible Porsches for me. I just don't need the top-down experience now that I track my car for the most part.

I was looking for more flair to the fenders but now I’m not sure, this is a busy car and a lot going on. They went too far on the doors, the Cayman hockey stick intake would have been plenty. I was hoping the hood would look more like the new 911. I’m not sure the hood and lights is even Porsche. I want to like this car, I’ll have to keep looking. I know the new 911 rocks, they got it just right there. I have always felt my 986 needed a ‘little more’ and I think they did that with the Spyder. All they needed to do was add a little Cayman flair, make it a little wider and longer and it would have been perfect. I’m not against new designs, I like progress.

This interior might be busy too but it is nice!

Perfectlap 01-12-2012 11:01 AM

I call this slap together design:

slap on some Carrera GT doors (the Ebay guys selling those fiberglass Carrera kits for your Boxster must be pissed). Slap on a wholly incongruent Panamera interior. Slap on some Cayenne 20 wheels. Slap on the old front end. And ask Mitsubishi if they mind borrowing their Spyder rear end. Nothing original or innovative. It is very obvious they are appealing to non-roadster enthusiast who would otherwise buy an SLK, BMW 645 or Lexus convertible.

ekam 01-12-2012 11:13 AM

I keep looking but I still don't see how that is similar to this simplistic interior...

Those good for nothing German designers put a panel break just above the intake on the Cayman too!

I'm betting they did this purposely to get fence sitters to choose a 911 that was designed properly.

jwade 01-12-2012 02:00 PM

Porsche has the configurator up and running on their website.

When personalizing my new Boxster S, I noticed under the 'Performance' tab that 'PSE' is NOT AVAILABLE....What's up with that?

jacabean 01-12-2012 02:18 PM

i think this car looks great ! awesome stance . this car will look stellar in person. side profile is very exotic looking with the door cuts and large ducts , i agree that seam is a little odd. the lights look cool too. a lot more flashy than the old cars .

ddb 01-12-2012 02:21 PM

My pet peeve: the brakes look tiny in those big wheels.

Dragonwind 01-12-2012 02:29 PM

Meh I'll have to see it in person. Right now I am now much of a fan as I hate the side intakes and the wing going into the tail lights. However it does look much better on the Cayman.

I can only assume it's a cost cutting measure. Most likely cheaper to produce 2 small pieces than 1 long, big piece of sheet metal.

That Cayman photo looks like a photoshopped pic of the 2013 boxster spy shot. You can almost guarantee the 2013 Cayman will have a slightly altered front & rear bumpers and headlights.

RandallNeighbour 01-12-2012 04:25 PM

Would it be blasphemous to buy one and immediately give it to a body shop to weld up that break and spray it to match?

I don't think I'd do this to a brand new one, but if I was buying a pre-owned one in, say, 2015 or 2016, it sure would be a consideration! I love the lines of the car except for that.
