Replacement key?

My car only has one key. I was quoted by the dealer that another key with remote would cost about $ 500.00. Has anyone ever purchased a used key with a remote and just replace it with a factory ordered key? I was planning to buy one used key on Ebay and just order the key from the dealer. This way I would save alot of money even though I'm not sure if this key switch would work. Thanks!

Richard

You can order a "valet" key for about $125 from the dealer. This will work in the door and the ignition but obviously, doesn't have the remote feature.

I have no experience with EBAY keys but if you do a search here, you will find some references.

The $500 is too high. More like $380 list price.

Good luck

I asked the parts department of a local Porsche dealer and was quoted that it will cost $ 400.00 for the key with remote and around $ 100.00 to have it repgrogrammed.

The reason why I brought up Ebay was because I saw a used key with remote that's being listed on Ebay. I was wondering if I buy that key, remove the cut blade and replace it with replacement key blade ordered from the local dealer. I do not know for sure if this can be done, just an idea to save some bucks. .

Thank you for your replies.

Richard

A remote key head must have a paper tag with a 24 digit code on it or it cannot be coded to the car. Without that tag for that specific remote the key head is worthless. Watch out for ebay keys. It also must be for the correct year.

BTW- the local dealer will sell you that key for about $279 and they charge $60 for programming. Your dealer is ripping you!

I just had a second key made locally and it cost me $260-280. I may be worth it to call a few other dealers in your area.

$125 for a piece of metal?

Are there electronics in the valet key? There must be something special to justify the $125 price tag.
