Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought....

Been spending some time on the Pontiac Solstice forum, seeing what they have to say about the Boxster: Pontiac Solstice Forum - Search Results for Boxster

They're pretty realistic, general consensus is the Boxster is way out of the Solstice's league and many of them wish they could afford a Boxster or even afford the maintanence a used Boxster requires. Most justify the Solstice by saying the turbo model has a similar 0-60 as the older S and has cheaper performance mods available but others just come right out and admit "I should have bought a used Boxster".

So I'm curious: seeing how we're all Boxster owners, has anyone had any regrets and wished they bought some other vehicle than a Boxster? Besides other Porsche models :D

Idaho Red Rocket 3 12-14-2011 08:21 PM

No !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jbocio 12-14-2011 08:23 PM

......Nope! :)

Mrmaddbrad 12-14-2011 08:30 PM

Regret? Hmm, seems that most boxster owners have eliminated this word from their vocabulary, shortly after their purchase :P

djomlas 12-14-2011 10:15 PM

that car barely compares.
i actually drove one, and wouldn't recomend it to anyone whos stuck between the two.
its cramped in there, cheaply made, trans sux, and seats are uncomfortable.

healthservices 12-14-2011 10:34 PM

As a second car I have no problems with having a boxster. As a primary, well maybe if I was a little younger and no kids.

I've been playing with this lately and it is a ton of fun for commuting. Yeah it sucks in the twisties :(

i seriously considered the Solstice before i decided i really could afford a Boxster and upped my game.

if it had to be american, most likely a Vette.

nothing in a higher-end european i can afford.

i will have a used Ferrari some day though...

Ghostrider 310 12-15-2011 12:41 AM

I'd still get a Boxster but... Wish I would have bought one with a PPI from a dealer, whether it would have made any difference I'll never know. When I could shift I thought about buying a Detomaso Pantera, I'm sure after the boxster it would feel unrefined. As JD noted, a 10 year old 360 Modena can be had for around the same dollars as a new Boxster, now what are the odds you can get a Ferrari engine to 100K?

landrovered 12-15-2011 03:11 AM

997 GT3 is the only car that I would sell my boxster for.

schnellman 12-15-2011 03:42 AM

Before buying the Boxster I honestly considered every car under the sun. I've had the Box for three years now and couldn't be happier with my choice.

fivepointnine 12-15-2011 04:25 AM

C55 AMG....
but if I ever get rid of the S it will be for a Cayman

Dale_K 12-15-2011 04:50 AM

I actually looked at a 2008 Solstice a few days ago and was considering trading in the Boxster. It was a nice car - only 10k miles and it had the 260 hp turbo motor but they wanted $20k for it.

I also looked at a Miata and I really do think the overall ownership experience would be better but I can't fit behind the wheel comfortably (6'3"). I am thinking about a new Jeep. You can buy a new soft top Wrangler with 285 hp for $22k around here.

Eric G 12-15-2011 05:18 AM

Nope, while you can always find something else out there that is faster, cheaper or different, owning a Porsche is about owning a passion.

Ok to simplify the posts please start each post with "Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought..."

Example: Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought... nothing else, the Boxster is perfect.

or

Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought... the Boxster made sense at the time for the price, but if I had the money I would have bought a lambo (or vette or GT3 or whatever)

Please do not say "Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought... a Veyron (or other ridiculous example)" unless it was something you could have actually purchased at the time and was considering. Posts will be on google/internet for all time so I'd like for others to come back and read this someday and go "Wow all these owners really liked their Boxsters even after many years of ownership, repairs, etc."

Also please include what you bought and when you bought it.

Here's mine:

Instead of a Boxster I wish I would have bought... nothing else, it's perfect so far. 1998 2.5, purchased 2011

I'm 6'1" and was very comfortable in a 2nd gen Miata. Actually I probably had more head room than in the Boxster. Which one were you having issues in?

Trading a Porsche for a Jeep? That's a lifestyle shift!

Panteras are such beautiful cars. It seems like they have a cult following but not the wide respect that they should. I love how the trunk is a removeable basket that sits over the transmission.

Fun? Aren't Lexus cars for people who don't like driving?

IT'S A TRAP! :D

Thread is for reference, so future potential buyers can read and decide whether a boxster is a good fit or maybe there is another vehicle they weren't considering. A thread like this would have helped me with my decision to purchase a boxster

ekam 12-15-2011 07:19 AM

I'll take the 458 Spyder with the leggy blonde in it.

I guess it depends on what you are doing. When driving from OC to LA during heavy traffic, I would pick the Lexus over the boxer each and every time. The drive is so much more enjoyable when you don't have to hear each and every sound the cars around you make as you drive. The ability to shut the hardtop and the outside noise is a big plus. The softer ride is also a plus with the horrible roads we have here commuting

Johnny Danger 12-15-2011 07:56 AM

First off, comparing a Solstice to a Boxster would be like comparing Sarah Palin to Sofia Loren ! As far as regrets are concerned, at one point the amount of money that went into mod'in my boxster became equal to, if not eclipsed, the cost of a pristine, low mileage 360 Modena . Oh, well, what's done is done. If things go as planned, sometime in the next year I'll have both (possibly even a 430 instead :)) .

Johnny Danger 12-15-2011 07:57 AM

She would definitely be better served by a man from Toronto .

ketsa 12-15-2011 08:20 AM

356 or Europe model 912 were my dream cars, but I couldn't find good enough for reasonable price, so I made compromise and bought the Boxster. But those are Porsche models... Maybe someday really old VW transporter will be the reason to sale my Boxster.

Instead of a Boxster I bought a bmw z4....Oh yeah... then I traded it 2 years later for a 3 year older Boxster. Never looked back!

I guess that could be fun. Like in the way a nice long nap is fun.

Hey it's a moving sofa with a very nice sound system... what more can you ask for when you need a nap?

AndyA6 12-15-2011 10:21 AM

My next car will be a GT3 and as long as I cannot afford one I stick with my Boxster.

blue2000s 12-15-2011 10:37 AM

Now that Ferraris don't come with manual transmissions, there's nothing to keep you interested in driving. So you may as well have a leggy blonde along for company. Even if she's only talking about shoes and the dog she carries around in her purse.

exactly my point. Makes a horrible drive so much more pleasant.

Overdrive 12-15-2011 11:58 AM

No regrets, but if we're gonna go into shoulda-woulda-coulda territory, I'd say a Lotus Esprit...ergonomics be damned.

thstone 12-15-2011 01:08 PM

My original plan was to start with a used 996 and then in a few years, move up to a 997. Then I drove a Boxster and decided that I could buy the Box and use the money saved to pay for track time/upgrades/repairs and learn how to properly drive first. This plan has worked out perfectly (thus far) except that I'd still like to own a 911 model (even test drove a used 997 Turbo last month - nice car!).

Dale_K 12-15-2011 01:32 PM

I owned a fully paid for C6 Corvette when I bought a 100k mile Boxster. I like driving the Boxster more, so I sold the Corvette.

I believe Jeep is a synonym for Junk... or is it an acronym? Junk Each and Every Part.... I can't remember. All I know is I got my mom to get rid of hers for a Toyota FJ and she couldn't be happier.

tnoice 12-15-2011 02:07 PM

this is where she would have been kicked out of the car. Messing with my mirror......

I have absolutely no regrets buying the Boxster and could not imagine having a different 2 seater sportscar.

Brockmeister 12-15-2011 03:28 PM

A 911. Period. It just wasn't in the budget. I've been a Porsche guy all my life.

DenverSteve 12-15-2011 03:34 PM

No regrets

No regrets...If I did I wouldn't have traded it in for another.

fivepointnine 12-15-2011 04:02 PM

I had the OK from my wife to buy a 996, but I still ended up with my Boxster S because it actually felt much more nimble and is pretty darn near as fast
