UPGRADE or REPLACE Brakes
My rotors are gone. I have less then 22mm on them. According to some research, this is below the minimum thickness.
I have a 98 boxster, and my ABS light is on. Obviously. I'm gonna need new rotors, but at the same time I want to upgrade to something else. Will it be worth it?! I found some used from a 2000 boxster TYPE S caliper and rotor set for $1000, but new stock NON TYPE S will cost about $400-500 for all 4. What would you guys do? I'm trying to save some money here, but at the same time, I think I'm missing out on a pretty good deal. |
My mechanics says my rotors wil have to be changed next time around... I'm going with Zimmerman cross drilled. Not expensive, no caliper exchanges to do, same brake pads type will be used (Textar) and braking should improve with the gas release and cooling the drilled rotors provide.

Not sure why you would trust used brake parts, I know I would not!
Just a preference issue I guess! |
BTW-If you don't mind driving an hour or so each way, I have an excellent brake man here in Carlsbad. I can also get you an attractive price.
Let me know. |
Richard, I think you misunderstood my post. I would be using NEW Textar pads that are identical to the ones I have on the car now... I like the brand. New rotors always deserve new pads... :D

Mid-America has the Zimmerman rotors. http://www.tweeks.com/shop?frame=8.2298
If you find a slightly better price ask for me and I will match it for you. |
Tirerack has some good rotors listed. They are slotted instead of cross-drilled so you won't get the cracking. They have one that's Cryogenically frozen for greater durability and they don't cost a fortune.

Sounds good guys. Thanks very much.
BruceLEE, thanks for your offer. However, I plan on installing them myself, so I don't think I will need your brake guy, unless his parts are cheap! I found some crossdrilled Zimmermans for ~$110 each FREE SHIPPING. Also, I'm going with Hawk HPS brake pads for about $104 each set for F & R. FREE SHIPPING also. total of about $650 or something. |
check ebay, send you a link for example, 4 for 304$+50$s/h+choose color

Let us know what you do and how it all turned out!
Good luck. |
any ever tried a couple of different brands/setups? Give us some input!

I plan on getting these. This guy isn't to far away from me, and I confirmed that he will allow my to pick it up.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2475081543&sspagename= ADME%3AB%3AAAQ%3AUS%3A1 This along wilth some HAWK HPS brake pads. This ebay selller also had some cadmium plated brakes also; are these well worth it? Also, how's everyone with Textar brake pads? I heard that they squeak a lot; whereas for the HAWKs, I've heard nothing but good things. |
Not the same application, but I recently put new Hawk HPS pads and Brembo rotors on my Subaru and have been happy with the result. Better feel and performance, but the starting level is not nearly the same as with the Boxster. Let us know how they feel in the Boxster...
